The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra has recently executed a series of raids on eleven food manufacturing establishments situated in the Shil-Diva region of Thane. These operations, held on September 6, resulted in the confiscation of raw materials, finished food items, and edible oil valued at Rs 20.48 lakh. The actions taken by the FDA are part of a larger initiative to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

The targeted units were located in Khardi Village, specifically at Bhaskar Compound. This proactive measure by the state’s FDA aims to uphold food quality standards and enforce legislation governing food safety.

Seized Items and Enforcement Actions

During the enforcement operation, the authorities reported the seizure of over 28,955 kg of solid food materials alongside various raw ingredients, which included a total of 56 litres of oil, all evaluated at Rs 20,48,801.50. The confiscated items featured products such as potato wafers, farali chivda, mixed farsan, bhakarwadi, schezwan sticks, banana chips, refined flour, gram flour, and palm oil.

Tukaram Munde, the Commissioner of FDA Maharashtra, emphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy concerning food quality. He reiterated that compromising public health or the safety of consumers would not be accepted under any circumstances. Legal action will remain stringent against individuals or establishments involved in the sale or storage of expired or adulterated food items.

Furthermore, the FDA outlined that organisers of mass food distribution events during various festivals are required to file a prior notification form on the Food & Drug Grievance Portal at least seven days in advance of their event. This measure seeks to enhance accountability in food safety practices.

License Suspensions for Food Violations

As part of the ongoing campaign titled ‘Safe Food, Safe Medicine, Safe Maharashtra,’ the FDA has undertaken strict enforcement initiatives. Prior to the recent raids, inspectors targeted five base kitchens and food plazas catering to railway passengers, resulting in the suspension of a Mumbai hotel’s food license due to severe hygiene issues such as cockroach infestations and unhygienic food transportation practices.

Improvement notices were issued to four additional suppliers as part of the FDA’s commitment to enhancing food safety standards. The administration’s vigilance also led to the immediate suspension of licenses for e-commerce platforms after the discovery of significant hygiene violations, including live cockroach infestations and breaches in cold-chain management.
