Entry Fee Collection System May Return to Previous Format, No Increase Announced: Himachal CM Sukhu

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent statement in the Assembly, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, announced that the state government is contemplating reverting to the prior method of entry fee collection. This follows considerable public discussion surrounding changes in how fees are assessed, particularly those relating to toll taxes integrated with FASTag systems for convenience.

Clarification on Fee Hike Claims

CM Sukhu emphasized that the government has not instituted any increases in entry fees. He criticized the spread of misinformation regarding the situation, asserting that no hikes have been made in any entry fee category. “Misinformation is being circulated regarding the toll tax and entry fee,” he stated, clearly indicating that he believes rumors of an increase are unfounded.

Inter-state Discussions on Entry Fees

Addressing concerns connected to cross-border implications, Sukhu mentioned his efforts to communicate with the Chief Minister of Punjab to resolve the matter, although he was unsuccessful in making direct contact. He did, however, connect with prominent Congress leaders from Punjab to discuss the situation further.

Government’s Review of Entry Tax Issue

During his address, Sukhu indicated that the government is actively reviewing the recent adjustments concerning the entry tax, with plans to rationalise the charges to prevent potential social unrest. He defended the introduction of robotic surgery services in public hospitals as part of the government’s broader healthcare initiatives.

Context of Protests and Public Reaction

Sukhu also noted that the ongoing protests regarding the entry tax increase are largely based on misconceptions. He clarified that the entry tax itself is not a new concept and has previously existed, including during the administration of the Bharatiya Janata Party. “We have only rationalised it,” he added, reflecting his belief that perceptions of a drastic fee increase are misguided.
