An elderly man from Punjab, who went missing during a pilgrimage to Amritsar, was accidentally located in Bihar. Chaman Lal, a resident of Fatehgarh Gujran village in Ludhiana, had travelled to Amritsar on September 11 under the Punjab government’s Chief Minister Pilgrimage Scheme to visit the Golden Temple. Lal’s family reported that he suffers from memory-related issues. During the pilgrimage, he became separated from his group while visiting the revered site, leading to a series of events that resulted in his unexpected journey.

Local Resident Provides Support

Upon arriving at the Amritsar railway station, Lal mistakenly boarded a train heading to Bihar. He eventually found himself in Gaya, where his condition caught the attention of a local resident named Neeraj. Noticing that Lal appeared distressed and in need of assistance, Neeraj engaged with him. However, Lal could only recall the name of his village, Fatehgarh Gujran, which proved insufficient for providing accurate directions home.

Determined to assist, Neeraj took Lal into his home, providing shelter and food for around four days. During this time, he made considerable efforts to reunite Lal with his family. Neeraj began using various online resources and chat platforms, including ChatGPT, to gather information about the village. His dedication to helping the elderly man became evident as he devoted several days to the search.

Neeraj eventually succeeded in tracing the location of Fatehgarh Gujran village in Ludhiana district, narrowing down the search significantly. He recognised the importance of ensuring Lal did not travel back alone and decided to accompany him for the return journey to ensure that Lal reached his family safely.

The Journey Back to Family

Upon their arrival in Ludhiana, Neeraj guided Lal towards the Machhiwara area, continuing to seek assistance from local residents. He showed Lal’s photograph to people in the vicinity, increasing the chances of finding someone who could identify him. This community effort led to a breakthrough, as a local man named Master Krishan Lal recognised Lal from a photograph that had been shared on social media during the search.

Krishan Lal then took the initiative to contact Lal’s family, creating a direct link between the elderly man and his relatives. His grandson, Sukhchain Singh, arrived at Machhiwara and promptly identified his grandfather, bringing the challenging search to a successful conclusion. Although Lal had initially gone missing from Amritsar, the combination of Neeraj’s efforts and the community’s willingness to help facilitated a joyous reunion.

This entire episode highlights the compassion and determination of individuals committed to assisting those in need. Neeraj, who works in the construction sector in Gaya, expressed that he felt compelled to help Lal after finding him alone. His efforts ensured that Lal was not only sheltered but also helped him make the return journey home.

Family Expresses Gratitude

Sukhchain Singh, representing the family, remarked on the extensive efforts they undertook to locate Lal, including searching throughout Amritsar and notifying local law enforcement. He noted that relatives and villagers had circulated Lal’s photograph widely, seeking assistance to trace him. The family expressed profound gratitude towards Neeraj for not only providing shelter but also for personally ensuring Lal’s safety during the journey back to Punjab. This act of kindness was instrumental in reuniting the elderly man with his family after several challenging days.
