Indian boxer Sumit advanced to the men’s 70kg round of 16 at the Asian Games 2026 after securing a unanimous decision victory over Thailand’s Bunjong Sinsiri on September 21. The match, which took place in Aichi-Nagoya, saw Sinsiri start aggressively, landing several effective punches in the initial exchanges.

As the opening round progressed, Sumit gradually found his rhythm, managing to establish control over the bout. Despite Sinsiri’s early efforts, Sumit was awarded the first round with a score of 4-1 by the judges. This outcome set the tone for the remainder of the match.

In the second round, Sumit displayed increased effectiveness, choosing his punches carefully. Sinsiri, facing the need to elevate his aggression, struggled against Sumit’s growing confidence. The Indian boxer executed strong attacks, particularly in the final 30 seconds of the round, further solidifying his advantage.

Holding a lead entering the third round, Sumit adopted a more strategic approach. He avoided unnecessary exchanges while continuing to land effective punches. His dominance in the final round was underscored by all five judges scoring it in his favour, leading to a comprehensive 5-0 victory and signalling his progression to the next round.

India’s Mixed Results Across Disciplines

Aside from Sumit’s success, India had a mixed yet eventful day at the Asian Games 2026, with various disciplines achieving notable outcomes. In soft tennis, Aadhya Tiwari and Jay Meena commenced their mixed doubles Group B campaign with a convincing 5-0 victory against Cambodia’s Viva Chao and Chanroseka Khun. The duo followed this with a win over Mongolia’s Bud Nyamdorj and Enkhkhuslen Ganbaatar.

Looking ahead in Group B, Tiwari and Meena were scheduled to face South Korea’s Kim Yeon-hwa and Jaekyu Park, which added to the excitement for the Indian team. The early victories have positioned them favourably as they continue their campaign.

In the shooting events, Rudrankksh Patil performed commendably, finishing third along with Himanshu Dhillon, who secured seventh place, thereby qualifying for the men’s 10m air rifle individual final. Parth Mané concluded his efforts in 11th place. India’s shooting team also claimed a silver medal in the team final, further boosting the country’s medal tally.

Swimming and Other Events

The swimming competitions saw Srihari Nataraj qualify for the men’s 50m backstroke final, while Rishabh Das was reserved for the event. However, Mani Akash and Gitesh Shah did not progress to the men’s 50m freestyle final, and Dhanush Suresh also missed out on a spot in the men’s 100m breaststroke final.

In wushu, Nyeman Wangsu participated in the women’s Changquan final, finishing in 15th place, concluding her event without a podium finish. In table tennis, the Indian women’s team achieved a decisive 3-0 victory against Pakistan in their Group F match.

Overall, the Indian contingent has demonstrated resilience and skill across various sports during the Asian Games 2026, contributing to the nation’s objectives in this multi-sport event.
