Amid growing concern over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Delhi, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has stated that all voters without prior mapping will receive SIR notices. His comments came in light of rising scrutiny surrounding the electoral notice distribution amid the ongoing revision process. Sirsa assured that the initiative does not make distinctions based on individuals’ financial backgrounds.

High-Profile Recipients of SIR Notices

The SIR revision has notably brought to light a number of prominent figures who have received notices due to discrepancies in their electoral records. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and former Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi are among those affected. The environment minister emphasised that the revision process flagged these discrepancies to ensure accurate and fair electoral rolls.

Approximately 33.13 lakh notices are being distributed across Delhi, highlighting inconsistencies in electoral details and cases where records were not linked to the previous electoral roll. The minister pointed out that the process aims to rectify these issues, enabling a more reliable electoral framework.

Furthermore, other notable recipients include CBI Director Praveen Sood and multiple senior bureaucrats both serving and retired. Kejriwal and four family members were specifically categorized as “Unmapped with Last SIR,” marking their inclusion in a group of 110 voters flagged within Assembly Constituency 40, which encompasses the New Delhi area.

Reactions to SIR Notices and Verification Process

Concerns have been raised surrounding the implications of receiving an SIR notice. Among them is the case of former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani and his family, who also received notices due to unlinked records stemming from the 2002 SIR electoral roll. Similarly, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia faced discrepancies concerning his electoral details. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has also been flagged for an age-related inconsistency.

Despite the concerns, Sirsa urged the public to furnish necessary documents and collaborate with the Election Commission of India (ECI) for a smooth verification process. He reiterated that receiving an SIR notice does not automatically result in the deletion of a voter’s name from the electoral roll. Instead, individuals must respond and provide supporting documentation to their local Electoral Registration Officer.

As of now, the process of addressing these notices is ongoing, with a deadline set for October 29. The final electoral roll is expected to be published on November 4. The Election Commission is taking steps to ensure that voters’ records are current and accurate, paving the way for transparent electoral participation in the upcoming elections.
