On September 21, 2026, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a significant advancement for the state, stating that the foundation stone for the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Advanced Radar Research Centre would be laid in Chandrapur, near Guwahati. The Chief Minister made this announcement via a post on social media platform X, highlighting the importance of this facility for space monitoring.

The Advanced Radar Research Centre is being developed under ISRO’s Project NETRA, which stands for Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis. This project aims to enhance India’s capability to track space objects and safeguard the nation’s vital space assets, contributing to a more secure space environment.

Sarma referred to this moment as a landmark occasion for Assam, reiterating its growing role as a hub for national strategic technology initiatives. The establishment of such a facility signifies a substantial investment in the region and underscores the government’s commitment to advancing technological infrastructure.

In conjunction with the announcement regarding the radar facility, Chief Minister Sarma also laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s significant investment in the state. The 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project, situated in Chapar, Dhubri district, is projected to cost Rs 48,000 crore. This represents one of the largest investments in Assam’s industrial sector to date.

The power project is expected to enhance the state’s electricity generation capacity significantly. During its construction phase, it is anticipated to create approximately 25,000 jobs and, upon completion, provide around 5,000 permanent positions. Sarma described this development as historic for Assam’s energy sector.

In his remarks, he expressed pride in the progress Assam is making towards energy self-reliance. The Chief Minister positioned this project as a cornerstone for future growth in the state’s power requirements, ensuring a stable electricity supply to bolster industrial activity and further investments.
