EAM Jaishankar Engages with French President Macron During G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with French President Emmanuel Macron on March 28 during the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Paris. Jaishankar characterized this meeting as an “honour” and conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Macron. In a post on X, Jaishankar noted the value of the discussion and acknowledged Macron’s insights.

Interaction with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister

In addition to his meeting with Macron, Jaishankar also held discussions with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on the same day. According to the Saudi Foreign Ministry, the two foreign ministers evaluated their countries’ bilateral relations and explored avenues for strengthening cooperation across various sectors.

They also addressed current regional and international developments that pertain to mutual interests. The meeting included prominent attendees such as Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to France Fahad Alrwaily and Waleed Al-Ismail, Director General of the Office of the Foreign Minister.

Cultural Engagement in Paris

Separately, Jaishankar visited the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Paris, where he shared his experience of witnessing the expressions of India’s cultural and spiritual heritage. In a post on X, he expressed confidence that the renovated centre would serve as an important hub for enhancing interest in Indian art and culture within the city.

Discussion on Maritime Navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

Earlier in the day, foreign ministers from the G7 nations underscored the pressing need to restore safe and toll-free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, particularly in light of ongoing regional conflicts. In a joint statement, they highlighted the importance of uninterrupted maritime transit in this critical energy corridor, calling for adherence to international law, including relevant UN frameworks and the Law of the Sea. The ministers emphasized the necessity of ensuring permanent restoration of safe navigation in line with UNSC Resolution 2817 and the Law of the Sea.
