E20 Fuel with RON 95 Launch Scheduled for April 1, 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

Beginning April 1, 2026, filling stations throughout India will start offering ethanol-blended petrol that contains up to 20 percent ethanol with a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95. This initiative, announced by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, represents a significant progression in India’s ethanol-blending strategy. The introduction of RON 95 raises questions about what this means for vehicle owners, especially those whose cars are not ready for E20 fuel.

What is RON 95?

The Research Octane Number (RON) is a metric that assesses a fuel’s capacity to resist knocking within an engine. Engine knocking occurs when the fuel-air mixture ignites unevenly in the cylinder, potentially leading to reduced efficiency and engine damage over time. A higher RON indicates a greater ability to withstand compression before ignition. Therefore, fuels with higher RON values provide better resistance against knocking and are more suitable for high-compression or turbocharged engines. The stipulation of a minimum RON of 95 for E20 fuel ensures that both performance and combustion stability remain unaffected, despite the elevated ethanol content.

The Role of Ethanol in Fuel

Ethanol is a renewable fuel derived from agricultural sources such as sugarcane and maize. The government’s aim to incorporate a 20 percent ethanol blend is directed towards several objectives, including reducing dependence on crude oil imports, lowering tailpipe emissions, supporting local farmers and ethanol producers, and enhancing energy security. The new fuel will adhere to the standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), thereby guaranteeing consistent quality across the country.

Impact of E20 and RON 95 on Vehicles

For those with E20-compatible vehicles, the expected transition is largely straightforward. Most newly manufactured cars and two-wheelers since 2023 have been specifically designed or modified to function with E20 fuel. This includes alterations to the engine, fuel lines, seals, and injectors to manage the increased corrosiveness of ethanol. The engine control unit (ECU) is calibrated for optimal performance with ethanol blends, and while there may be a minor decrease in fuel efficiency due to ethanol’s lower energy density, the shift should overall maintain performance stability. The higher RON 95 rating may even enhance the performance of turbocharged engines by enabling smoother combustion.

In contrast, owners of older, non-E20 vehicles will need to approach the transition more cautiously. Vehicles not designed for E20 present various challenges. Ethanol’s corrosive nature may accelerate degradation of older fuel system components, such as fuel hoses and rubber seals. Drivers might also notice a reduction in fuel efficiency since ethanol generally contains less energy per liter than petrol, leading to lower mileage and potential cold start issues for some older engines. Persistent usage of E20 in non-compatible vehicles may result in increased wear on components like fuel pumps and injectors. Consequently, owners of petrol cars manufactured before 2020 are advised to verify E20 compatibility through their owner’s manual and to consult authorized service centers for thorough inspections of fuel system parts.

Broader Impact of Ethanol Adoption

The push for ethanol adoption in India is part of a long-term strategy focused on reducing oil import reliance and promoting environmentally friendly transportation. While older vehicles may face immediate challenges in adapting to the new fuel standards, manufacturers are actively producing E20-compatible engines and retrofit options. The combination of 20 percent ethanol and RON 95 aims to strike a balance between achieving environmental objectives and ensuring engine performance stability. For buyers of new cars, this development is less likely to pose a concern, whereas awareness and proactive maintenance will be essential for owners of older petrol vehicles as the date approaches.
