Drones, Choppers, Air Defence: Centre Approves Rs 2.12 Lakh Crore Acquisition Proposals

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian government has announced a significant initiative to enhance its armed forces, with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approving proposals worth approximately Rs 2.12 lakh crore. This decision aims to bolster the capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The DAC, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, granted these approvals in the form of Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), which provides in-principle administrative consent for the proposed acquisitions.

Approximately 82 per cent of the procurements are expected to be sourced from Indian industry, reflecting a strong emphasis on domestic production. The approved acquisitions encompass a wide array of military requirements, including artillery systems, high-mobility vehicles, helicopters, air defence equipment, counter-drone systems, and long-range drones. This comprehensive approach is intended to enhance the operational capabilities across all three branches of the armed forces.

The DAC’s decision marks a pivotal moment in India’s defence strategy, as it seeks to modernise its military capabilities in response to evolving security challenges. The procurement plans are designed to ensure that the armed forces are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and systems that can effectively address contemporary threats.

Army to Enhance Mobility and Firepower

The Army is set to receive a diverse range of new systems aimed at improving its mobility, firepower, air defence, and surveillance capabilities. Among the approved acquisitions are High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs), a Self-Propelled Tracked Gun System, a Gun Shot Response System (GSRS), Light Multi Role Helicopters (LMRH), and a Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS).

The High Mobility Vehicles are anticipated to significantly improve the Army’s operational mobility, especially in challenging terrains. The Self-Propelled Tracked Gun System will enhance mechanised formations by providing increased mobility and firepower. Additionally, the Gun Shot Response System will deliver real-time situational awareness, serving as a vital force multiplier.

The Light Multi Role Helicopters will support various missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, combat operations, and humanitarian assistance. The Very Short-Range Air Defence System aims to counter emerging aerial threats, particularly against small, new-generation targets. Furthermore, the Platform Based Counter Unmanned Aerial System is expected to enhance the survivability of tanks on the battlefield.

Navy to Strengthen Anti-Missile Defence Capabilities

The DAC has also approved significant acquisitions for the Indian Navy, including an Active Offboard Decoy System (AODS) and other major naval platforms. The AODS is designed to enhance the Navy’s anti-missile defence capabilities by effectively countering modern anti-ship missiles.

These naval platforms will be developed and constructed indigenously, incorporating advanced warfare capabilities. The emphasis on domestic production is expected to strengthen the Navy’s combat strength and operational effectiveness, ensuring that it remains prepared for various maritime challenges.

By focusing on indigenous solutions, the Navy aims to enhance its self-reliance and operational readiness, which is crucial in the context of regional security dynamics. The approved acquisitions will play a key role in modernising the Navy’s capabilities in the face of evolving threats.

Air Force to Acquire Advanced Systems and Equipment

The Indian Air Force is set to benefit from the DAC’s approvals, which include the procurement of helicopters, air defence systems, weapons, and a Mobile X-Band Doppler Weather Radar System. These acquisitions are intended to fortify the Air Force’s operational readiness and combat capabilities.

The proposed acquisition of Special Utility Helicopters will address the Air Force’s air transport needs, while new air defence systems and weapons are expected to enhance its overall war-fighting capabilities. The Mobile X-Band Doppler Weather Radar System will provide high-resolution weather surveillance in forward areas, improving monitoring in operational zones.

This comprehensive set of approvals reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the armed forces through modern technology and equipment. With a focus on domestic sourcing, the initiative aims to boost India’s defence manufacturing sector while ensuring that the military is well-equipped to meet future challenges.
