DRI Seizes Rs 1.8 Crore Gold Biscuits at Bengaluru Airport

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has uncovered a smuggling operation at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, resulting in the seizure of 1.3 kg of gold biscuits valued at Rs 1.8 crore. This operation highlights a significant attempt to bypass Customs regulations using unsuspecting passengers.

According to reports, the smuggling network allegedly brought the contraband from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The accused purportedly used an unusual method of concealing the gold biscuits by affixing them beneath luggage trolleys. This tactic aimed to exploit the ignorance of travellers passing through Customs.

The DRI’s prompt action followed specific intelligence regarding the smuggling activities. Officials seized the gold biscuits before they could be retrieved by the individuals involved in the operation. This vital intervention aimed to prevent the successful execution of the smuggling plan.

Modus Operandi of the Smuggling Ring

Reports suggest that the smuggling ring focused on targeting passengers who were oblivious to the hidden contraband. By placing the gold beneath luggage trolleys, the accused were able to blend in with regular travellers and evade detection during Customs checks. This method allowed them to manipulate innocent passengers into unknowingly assisting in the transport of illegal goods.

Once the unwitting passengers picked up the trolleys and cleared Customs, the accused would reportedly follow them to reclaim the concealed items. This approach not only involved significant planning but also relied heavily on the unsuspecting nature of the targeted travellers.

The DRI’s investigation into this smuggling operation will focus on discerning the full extent of the network involved. Authorities aim to gather additional information concerning the individuals operating behind the scenes to facilitate such illegal activities. The success of this operation may lead to further crackdowns on similar smuggling networks in the future.

Continued Vigilance Against Smuggling

The seizure at Bengaluru airport underscores ongoing concerns regarding smuggling activities in India, particularly in major transportation hubs. The DRI consistently works to identify and dismantle such networks, protecting both national interests and public safety. The incident exemplifies the challenges faced by authorities as smugglers continue to devise new methods to evade law enforcement.

As investigations proceed, officials are likely to enhance monitoring and evaluation of both incoming and outgoing goods at airports. Increased scrutiny may lead to the introduction of more stringent measures aimed at curbing smuggling operations across the country.

Furthermore, public awareness campaigns may be launched to educate travellers about the risks associated with unwittingly carrying contraband. Such initiatives could play an essential role in preventing individuals from becoming unintentional participants in illegal activities.
