Doctor Secretly Films Colleague, Demands ₹25 Lakh Ransom; 3,000 Videos Recovered

The CSR Journal Magazine

A doctor in Rajkot has been charged with installing a covert camera in a clinic to film a colleague, using the footage to extort money. The accused, Dr. Kamal Nandha, reportedly acted out of unreciprocated affection for a female physician. Law enforcement has indicated that over 3,000 video clips have been retrieved during their investigation, highlighting a systematic approach to both surveillance and blackmail.

Method of Surveillance

According to a complaint filed at the Rajkot Cyber Crime Police Station, Dr. Nandha deceitfully set up a hidden camera housed in a bulb holder within the clinic’s delivery room on Sadhu Vaswani Road. This device recorded footage whenever the light was turned on, saving it on a memory card. Investigators believe that the accused had been replacing the memory card periodically to collect recorded material, a practice that may have started in early 2023.

Blackmail and Extortion Details

The footage reportedly included private moments involving the victim, a fellow doctor, and another female colleague. Authorities claim the accused shared portions of these videos with local middlemen and individuals impersonating journalists. This material was allegedly used to intimidate the victim, who was threatened with public exposure unless he paid a ransom of Rs 25 lakh. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Jagdish Bangarva, noted that Dr. Nandha, who holds a BHMS degree, had legitimate access to the clinic, which facilitated the covert filming.

Escalation of the Situation

Over time, the attempts at blackmail escalated, with persistent harassment beginning in 2024. While Rs 25 lakh was demanded, investigators discovered that Rs 50,000 had already been extorted from the victim. A total of 12 individuals have been implicated in this case, facing various charges such as extortion, conspiracy, and intimidation, alongside violations of the Information Technology Act.

Motive Behind the Actions

The alleged motive for Dr. Nandha’s actions stems from his one-sided romantic feelings for a female doctor, who was reportedly involved with the complainant. Unable to cope with this situation, he is accused of leveraging the illicit recordings as a means of coercion. Authorities are also taking action against those involved in disseminating or taking advantage of the recorded material.

Ongoing Investigation

Law enforcement is actively working to identify all individuals connected to this case and is gathering additional evidence, including digital records associated with the videos. This case has sparked significant concern regarding the violation of privacy and the potential misuse of surveillance technology in professional environments. Investigators anticipate further arrests as the inquiry progresses, and officials have called on medical establishments to reinforce internal security practices to avert similar incidents in the future.
