Delhi Prepares for Heavy Rain and Winds Tonight

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant pre-monsoon storm is currently advancing across northern India, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a weather alert. The anticipated storm is expected to affect Delhi, its surrounding areas, and numerous towns in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, leading to a notable change in weather conditions this evening.

Rainfall Forecast for Delhi

Rain is indeed expected, with the IMD announcing rainfall has already begun to approach the capital. As of 5:15 PM IST on March 18, the department warned of light to moderate rain, likely accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds traveling at speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour are anticipated to affect the Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) over the next couple of hours. Meteorological projections suggest the initial rains will impact Delhi and Gurugram between 6:15 PM and 8:30 PM, while Ghaziabad, Noida, and Faridabad can expect rainfall from 6:30 PM to 9 PM.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

Experts have issued warnings regarding severe thunderstorms, indicating the possibility of heavy rain and hail between 5 PM and 7 PM. Winds during this period could reach speeds of 40 kilometers per hour. Residents are strongly advised to remain indoors, avoid open areas, and distance themselves from windows to ensure safety during lightning occurrences.

Areas Under Alert

The IMD’s weather alert encompasses a wide range of locations beyond Delhi. In Haryana, towns such as Narwana, Jind, Panipat, Hissar, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Sonipat, Rewari, Mahendargarh, Narnaul, Nuh, Palwal, Jhajjar, and Charkhi Dadri are included in the warning. In western Uttar Pradesh, the alert extends to Shamli, Bagpat, Baraut, and Khekra. Additionally, towns in Rajasthan, including Bhiwari, Khairthal, Kotputli, and Tizara, are also affected by the warning issued by the IMD.

Weather Conditions Across India

The unsettled weather pattern is not confined to northern India. Regions in the Western Himalayas, particularly Kashmir and Uttarakhand, are currently experiencing snowfall at higher elevations, while lower areas are receiving rainfall. Other states such as Punjab, Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat are also experiencing dust storms and thundershowers. Furthermore, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the northeastern states are contending with distinct rain systems influenced by separate moisture activities.
