A 17-year-old girl was reportedly gang-raped by three men who posed as police officers in Aastha Kunj Park, located in Delhi’s Kalkaji area, on the evening of September 21. The incident occurred shortly after the victim and her 17-year-old male friend entered the park following a visit to the nearby Kalkaji Temple. Around 7.30 pm, the pair sat on an empty bench when the accused approached them under the pretext of being police personnel. They allegedly used authoritative language to intimidate the teenagers, ultimately isolating the victim from her companion.

According to police reports, the accused threatened the girl with a firearm and a knife, subsequently committing the crime before fleeing the scene. The victims managed to escape and alert the authorities, leading to a prompt police response shortly after the incident.

Police Response and Investigation

At approximately 8.45 pm, a PCR call was made, prompting a team from the Amar Colony police station to rush to Aastha Kunj Park. After taking the accounts from the girl and her friend, the victim was transported to AIIMS for a medical examination. Forensic experts and police teams conducted an investigation at the crime scene, gathering vital evidence.

An FIR was subsequently filed at Amar Colony police station, invoking several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Law enforcement quickly organised multiple teams to identify and apprehend the suspects using descriptions provided by the victims alongside CCTV footage from the park and surrounding area.

By the morning of September 22, the police had effectively tracked down the suspects. Investigators received specific information regarding one of the accused, Asif, leading to a strategic operation to detain him. This operation resulted in an armed exchange in which Asif allegedly fired upon police, leading to his injury and capture.

Further Developments and Assurance of Justice

Asif was found with a firearm when apprehended and was subsequently taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for medical attention. Following this arrest, police intensified efforts to locate the remaining suspects, Hemant and Mukesh, who were later apprehended. The police are now engaged in interrogating all three suspects to ascertain their individual roles in the incident.

Authorities are focusing on tracing the origins of the weapons used in the assault and reconstructing the suspects’ movements both prior to and after the crime. In addition to examining forensic evidence, investigators plan to review the girl’s medical report and CCTV footage to build a comprehensive case. Public safety and the victim’s welfare have been prioritised as the investigation continues.

The Delhi Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the case and has requested a detailed report from the police regarding the measures taken post-incident. They have emphasised the need for swift and stringent action, with collective monitoring of the investigation to ensure that justice is served and that protective measures are implemented for the victim.
