CJP Leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka Detained by Delhi Police After Entering Jantar Mantar

The CSR Journal Magazine

CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained by the Delhi Police on Tuesday following an attempt to enter Jantar Mantar, a location recently denotified as a designated protest venue. The incident escalated when Ranka and others allegedly jumped over a gate to gain access to the premises, prompting police action.

Alongside Ranka, Ajinkya Shinde and several other supporters were also taken into custody. The group reportedly entered Jantar Mantar from the vicinity of the Janata Dal (United) office, which is adjacent to the site. This unapproved entry was captured in a video that Ranka posted on social media shortly before being detained.

The video showcased Ranka, Das, and other CJP members crossing the gate and entering the area, provoking concerns regarding the regulations governing public assemblies. Ranka accompanied the video with a caption that read, “Hands Off Jantar Mantar!” indicating a clear protest against the restrictions in place at the site.

Response from Law Enforcement

Upon gaining access to Jantar Mantar, the group was met with immediate police intervention, resulting in their detention. Initial reports suggested that the police would be considering filing a First Information Report (FIR) in relation to the incident. However, as of that moment, there was no confirmation on whether such legal action had been undertaken.

Das had arrived earlier with a few associates before attempting the unauthorised entry into the site. Following their apprehension, it became apparent that the Delhi Police were taking the situation seriously, reflecting the strict enforcement of regulations surrounding public protests in the area.

The authorities maintained that Jantar Mantar’s denotification had been implemented to control unauthorised protests, which have historically led to significant disruptions. The involvement of police forces during the incident reflects ongoing tensions between the need for public expression and adherence to legal frameworks.

Context of the Demonstration

The incident at Jantar Mantar highlights the broader context of protests in India, where the right to assembly is often challenged by legislation aimed at maintaining public order. Activism in the area has sometimes faced restrictions, raising concerns among various groups regarding the diminishing avenues for peaceful demonstrations.

In recent times, new regulations have been introduced that limit access to protest sites, a move viewed by several activist groups as an infringement on democratic rights. The actions of the CJP leaders indicate a continuing struggle against these changes, demonstrating that some individuals and organisations are willing to defy restrictions to voice their dissent.

As the situation unfolds, further developments regarding any legal actions taken against Das, Ranka, and their colleagues may emerge. The outcome could potentially influence public discourse surrounding protest rights and the boundaries set by law enforcement in India.
