The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan and Oman have formalised their commitment to enhance collaboration in various sectors, including trade, investment, and energy. This agreement was reached during the eighth session of the Pakistan-Oman Joint Ministerial Commission held in Islamabad on Wednesday. The discussions were led by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi.

Both nations have agreed to establish joint working groups focused on multiple areas, such as agriculture, oil and gas, and human resource development. Dar announced plans to organise a business investment forum in Pakistan to further promote economic engagement between the two countries.

During the press conference following the meeting, Dar emphasised the significance of fostering formal cooperation to bolster trade and investment opportunities. The two ministers also underscored the importance of enhancing collaboration in labour and human resource development as a means to support economic growth.

Concerns Over Regional Tensions

In light of escalating tensions in the Gulf region, both leaders called for restraint and diplomacy. Dar highlighted the necessity for safe navigation through critical waterways, such as the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb, which are vital for global food and energy security. He condemned the recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, labelling them as “totally unacceptable” and detrimental to regional stability.

Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia, stressing the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The discussions also encompassed the broader regional context, including the ongoing situation in Gaza and the negotiations between Iran and the United States. Both ministers expressed their concerns regarding the expansion of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories and advocated for unhindered humanitarian assistance to the affected populations.

Furthermore, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding position on the Kashmir issue, ensuring that it remains a priority in diplomatic discussions with Oman. The two countries have shown a unified stance on various regional matters, reinforcing their commitment to peaceful resolutions through dialogue.

Building Confidence Through Dialogue

Albusaidi, who arrived in Islamabad on 10 October for a two-day visit, acknowledged Pakistan’s role in facilitating regional dialogue. He expressed optimism that ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States could foster confidence and lead to peaceful solutions for regional challenges.

During their discussions, the two ministers explored avenues for expanding economic and commercial cooperation. They focused on key areas such as connectivity, logistics, food security, and technology, recognising the potential for mutual benefit in these sectors.

Dar and Albusaidi both reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for addressing conflicts. They expressed a shared understanding that peaceful solutions are the only viable path forward for resolving regional tensions. The commitment to closer economic ties reflects their mutual interest in fostering stability and cooperation in the Gulf region.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of both countries’ dedication to enhancing bilateral relations and addressing regional issues through collaborative efforts. As Pakistan and Oman move forward, their partnership is poised to contribute positively to the economic landscape and regional stability.
