Delhi NCR Metro Plans To Open Three Major Phase 4 Corridors By December

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi Metro is expected to unveil three new corridors by December 2026, as per statements from Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). These corridors include the Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg extension of the Magenta Line, the Aerocity to Tughlakabad corridor, and the Majlis Park to Maujpur extension of the Pink Line. Kumar confirmed these developments during an interview with PTI.

In addition to the December openings, Kumar revealed that three further corridors have recently been approved. These additional routes will expand the Phase 4 development considerably. The newly sanctioned corridors consist of the Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor, Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block corridor, and the Rithala-Narela-Nathupur extension, which are projected for completion around 2029. This timeline, however, is contingent upon various approvals, land acquisition processes, and construction progress.

Progress In Phase 5 Expansion Initiatives

Kumar detailed the forthcoming Phase 5 expansion plans, highlighting that the DMRC has set a target for completion by 2028 for several key routes. These routes include RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha, Aerocity to IGD Airport Terminal-1, and Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj as part of Phase 5(A). The development of these routes aims to further enhance connectivity within Delhi.

The detailed project report (DPR) for seven additional corridors under Phase 5(B) has been prepared and submitted to the central government. These corridors include Dhansa Bus Stand to Nangloi, Central Secretariat to Kishangarh, Samaypur Badli to Narela DDA Sports Complex, Kirti Nagar to Palam, Jor Bagh to Mithapur, Mayur Vihar Phase 3 to Shastri Park, and Keshav Puram to Rohini Sector 34. Overall, the proposed Phase 5B network is expected to cover around 97.158 kilometres across the capital.

Kumar described the Phase 5B initiative as substantial, emphasising that it aims to reach areas previously lacking Metro access. The project will incorporate alternative routes and multiple interchanges to facilitate smoother travel across the network.

Focus On Connectivity And Completion Timeline

The primary objective of these expansion plans is to improve connectivity in underserved regions, enhance interchange facilities, and alleviate congestion and travel times for residents of Delhi-NCR. The Phase 4 project initially received approval from the Union Cabinet in 2019 and aims to improve connectivity in outer Delhi and densely populated sectors that currently do not have Metro access.

Under the existing Phase 4 expansion programme, two segments have already been completed and are operational. The Janakpuri West to Krishna Park Extension section of the Magenta Line started service in January 2025, while the Majlis Park to Maujpur section of the Pink Line was opened in March 2026. Another segment linking Majlis Park to Deepali Chowk on the Magenta Line has also been finalised as part of this ongoing expansion.

DMRC is now focusing its efforts on completing the remaining priority corridors of Phase 4 by the end of this year. These include the Krishna Park Extension to RK Ashram Marg section of the Magenta Line and the Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity corridor on the Golden Line, both of which are anticipated to significantly enhance connectivity within the city. The Krishna Park to RK Ashram Marg stretch is expected to improve east-west connectivity, whereas the Golden Line corridor will strengthen links between southern Delhi, the airport region, and other crucial urban centres.
