Delhi-NCR Faces Frequent Power Outages Amid Extreme Heat

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi-NCR is currently enduring a severe heatwave, with recorded temperatures soaring beyond 45°C. Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the struggles faced by residents due to frequent power cuts, stating, “In this severe 45-degree heat, power cuts are happening across Delhi.” This situation has sparked widespread discontent among residents, particularly as many report unanticipated blackouts, especially during the night.

Complaints about power outages have surged across various social media platforms, with numerous residents noting interruptions lasting several hours, intensifying their discomfort during the heat. Power distribution companies such as BSES have received a multitude of grievances, yet officials claim they are working to resolve these issues.

The frequency of these outages leaves the residents puzzled, searching for explanations amid the extreme weather conditions impacting the area.

Impact of Heatwave on Power Demand

The current situation is not entirely unexpected given the context of the heatwave. Average temperatures in Delhi-NCR are significantly elevated, leading to increased demand for electricity due to air conditioners and fans working overtime. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings about persistent extreme conditions, including high daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Furthermore, the rise in nighttime temperatures has caused discomfort, with minimum temperatures often lingering in the upper 20s, occasionally exceeding 30°C. The urban heat island effect, driven by concrete buildings and diminished green spaces, exacerbates this situation, as these structures retain heat during the day and release it slowly at night.

Such elevated temperatures create health risks for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and outdoor workers, as their bodies have reduced opportunities to cool down. Consequently, this leads to a spike in energy consumption, with cooling devices operating continuously throughout both day and night, further intensifying the pressure on the power grid.

Infrastructure Strain and Planned Outages

On May 18, the electricity demand was recorded at 7,542 MW in the afternoon and continued to rise into the evening. Such spikes are indicative of a mounting strain on the distribution network, particularly when numerous consumers activate cooling appliances at similar times, potentially overwhelming local infrastructure. Despite improvements in Delhi’s power supply capabilities over recent years, the rapid pace of urban expansion and persistent extreme weather often challenge the system.

As the weather patterns linked to climate change contribute to more frequent and severe heatwaves, this increased demand poses additional strain on the power grid across the nation. With the ongoing issues surrounding power cuts, prompted by both high demand and the need for maintenance and upgrades, residents continue to face challenges in securing a stable electricity supply.

Future Disruptions Expected

The situation appears set to persist, as on May 20, the power companies BSES and Tata Power DDL announced scheduled outages for technical work, including maintenance and transformer upgrades. These outages will affect various regions within the city, including areas such as Hauz Khas, Janakpuri, and Rohini.

Officials assert that these planned outages are essential for long-term reliability improvements within the power networks. Nevertheless, as temperatures in Delhi are expected to peak at 46°C, the timing of these interruptions is likely to exacerbate the hardships faced by residents coping with the extreme heat.

The continued power disruptions, particularly during this intense heatwave, signal an urgent need for enhanced infrastructure capabilities to safeguard against similar challenges in the future.
