Delhi-NCR Experiences Brief Respite from Heat Due to Rain

The CSR Journal Magazine

Residents of Delhi-NCR have found relief this week as thunderstorms, high winds, and rainfall have alleviated the extreme heat that has lingered since early March. The capital recorded its hottest day of the year so far, hitting maximum temperatures exceeding 35°C, significantly above seasonal averages. This spike in temperature was attributed to clear skies and intense sunlight, with limited respite from western disturbances observed during those days.

Western Disturbance Triggers Weather Shift

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a western disturbance had altered the weather pattern across northern India, resulting in dust storms, heavy rainfall, lightning, and strong winds impacting Delhi and the neighboring National Capital Region (NCR). This trend surprised many residents who had been coping with intense heat and humidity just days prior to this sudden change. The effects of this weather system extended beyond Delhi, prompting alerts for several areas in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Duration of Rainy Conditions

The rainfall providing a break from the heat is expected to be short-lived. The IMD has indicated that these rainy conditions will continue until March 20, resulting in overcast skies and cooler temperatures for approximately 48 hours. Following this period, weather patterns are anticipated to stabilize, with a return to partly cloudy to clear skies reminiscent of the days preceding the rain. During the wet phase, daytime temperatures are forecasted to vary between 27°C and 32°C, accompanied by gusty winds. However, with the clearing of clouds, hotter weather is anticipated to reemerge.

Future Temperature Predictions

The IMD has cautioned that maximum temperatures are likely to rise again as the western disturbance’s influence diminishes and clearer skies return. The early heat observed in March has already been suggested as an indicator of potential heatwaves that could affect northern India later in the summer. For the time being, residents of Delhi and the surrounding areas can appreciate the cooler mornings and cloudy conditions, at least until the upcoming weekend.
