In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a 35-year-old man allegedly killed his wife in Delhi’s Najafgarh area before attempting to take his own life. The police said the motive behind the murder was the victim’s social media activity, which her husband strongly disapproved of. The accused, an e-rickshaw driver named Aman, is currently hospitalized under police custody.
Police were alerted to the crime at around 4:23 a.m. on Tuesday after receiving a PCR call. A team dispatched to a rented residence in Old Roshanpura found the body of a woman, a permanent resident of Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. The victim, who was the mother of two young boys, aged nine and five, had been strangled to death.
Frequent Arguments Over Online Presence
Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple, who had been married for over ten years, frequently clashed over the woman’s active presence on social media. She had described herself as a “social media artist” with approximately 6,000 followers and was known for creating videos and reels. A senior police officer stated that domestic abuse had also surfaced during the initial inquiry, with Aman reportedly beating his wife over her online activities.
Statement of Police
“The couple were permanent residents of Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh,” an officer mentioned. “Preliminary inquiry revealed that Aman objected to her making reels and remaining active on different social media platforms, where she described herself as a social media artist with about 6,000 followers,” the officer said, adding that the couple often argued over the issue.
“Matters of domestic abuse have also surfaced during initial inquiry where Aman used to beat his wife for making reels and videos,” a senior police officer said.
“Aman was trying to commit suicide by hanging from a scarf from the ceiling fan when it broke. He started shouting and came out of the house, and said he killed his wife and consumed poison. The landlord saw him first and made a PCR call to the police,” the officer said.
On Tuesday, the long-standing argument escalated into a violent confrontation, culminating in Aman allegedly strangling his wife. In a desperate act, he then attempted suicide by hanging and consuming poison. According to an officer, Aman tried to hang himself from a ceiling fan with a scarf, but the fan broke. He then shouted that he had killed his wife and consumed poison, which alerted their landlord. The landlord, seeing him in distress, promptly called the police.
Rescue and Ongoing Investigation
The police team arrived at the scene just in time to rescue Aman. He was rushed to Rao Tula Ram Memorial (RTRM) Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. The woman’s body has been preserved for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities are now focused on a thorough investigation, including recording statements from neighbours and relatives to piece together the exact sequence of events. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the law, including murder, and further investigation is in progress.
A Troubling Trend
This tragic incident in Najafgarh comes just days after a similar case was reported in Greater Noida, where a woman named Nikki Bhati was allegedly set on fire by her husband after a dispute over her running a beauty parlor and posting reels.
Nikki and her sister, who had a combined following of over 54,000 on Instagram, were popular social media content creators. These back-to-back incidents highlight a disturbing trend of domestic violence linked to women’s professional and personal use of social media. The investigations in both cases continue as authorities work to bring justice to the victims.
