Xavier Bettel, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, has arrived in India for an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. The visit commenced on September 7 and is scheduled to last three days, concluding on September 9. Bettel’s itinerary includes a high-level meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, in New Delhi.

Upon his arrival, Bettel was welcomed warmly by Indian officials. Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, took to X to express this sentiment, stating that the visit represents an opportunity to enhance the multifaceted relationship between India and Luxembourg.

During his time in India, Bettel is also expected to travel to Chennai. His agenda in the southern city includes visiting the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, as well as inaugurating a new campus for SES, highlighting Luxembourg’s interest in educational collaborations.

Prior Diplomatic Interactions

This visit follows an earlier engagement between Bettel and Jaishankar in Luxembourg earlier in the year, where discussions centred around strengthening collaboration in sectors such as FinTech, space, and artificial intelligence. These areas are increasingly relevant in the context of global economic development and technological advancement.

Jaishankar previously noted the historical and ongoing ties between India and Luxembourg, reflecting a relationship founded on mutual respect and cooperation. This context is significant as the two countries look to build upon their existing rapport established since the diplomatic relations were formalised in 1948.

The interconnectedness of these nations is further exemplified through Luxembourg’s establishment of its Embassy in New Delhi in February 2002, alongside the presence of honorary consuls in major Indian cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.
