In a shocking incident, a 17-year-old boy, identified as Karan, tragically died on Tuesday morning. His death occurred inside a juvenile correction home in North Delhi’s Majnu Ka Tila area. The boy was allegedly killed after being assaulted by two other inmates over a dispute . According to reports, the dispute was allegedly concerning bathing arrangements.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community. The death of the minor inside a government-run protected premises have raised serious concerns about the safety and supervision of minors.
Argument erupts over bathing
According to Delhi Police, the altercation occurred around 9:15 AM in the washing zone of the juvenile home. A heated argument reportedly broke out between Karan and another 17-year-old inmate over who would bathe first. The situation quickly escalated when a 20-year-old inmate, informed about the dispute, joined in and allegedly assaulted Karan.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia stated that the two accused repeatedly punched and kicked Karan until he collapsed. Staff at the juvenile home immediately rushed him to the nearby Hindu Rao Hospital. However, upon arrival the doctors unfortunately declared him dead at approximately 9:46 AM.
“The deceased and his friend, with whom he was arrested, went to have a bath in the morning. They started arguing over who would go in first and got into a scuffle. The deceased was beating up his friend when the other accused intervened,” a police officer said.
Police investigation underway
According to reports, the Police investigations are underway, and a case has been registered. The case has been registered under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) at the Timarpur police station. Two guards were reportedly present outside the washing zone at the time of the incident and raised an alarm.
Authorities revealed that Karan was lodged in the correction home in connection with an attempt to murder. The case against Karan was registered at the Hauz Khas police station this year. One of the alleged assailants, aged 17, was apprehended with Karan in the same attempt to murder case. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old accused was previously apprehended in a 2022 murder case.
Authorities are monitoring CCTV footage
Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from inside the correction home to establish the precise sequence of events. They are also awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death. This alarming incident has put significant pressure on officials to enhance supervision and security within the facility to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
