Gold and Silver Prices Drop Ahead of Festive Season Amid Inflation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gold and silver prices are experiencing a downward trend as many Indians prepare to purchase these precious metals for the upcoming festive season. With significant occasions like Karwa Chauth, Dhanteras, and Diwali approaching, the current price drop may present an opportunity for buyers to acquire gold and silver at reduced rates. As of now, MCX gold is trading at Rs 1,42,611 per 10 grams, reflecting a decrease of 0.49%, while MCX silver is priced at Rs 1,96,198 per kg, down by 1.71%.

This decline in prices is attributed to rising crude oil costs, which have sparked concerns regarding sustained high interest rates in the United States. Investors are closely monitoring the forthcoming US Federal Reserve policy meeting and inflation data, which may influence the future trajectory of precious metal prices.

Factors Influencing Price Decline

The pressure on gold and silver prices is largely due to increasing energy costs, which have raised inflation concerns and the likelihood of prolonged elevated interest rates. Higher interest rates typically diminish the appeal of precious metals, as they do not yield interest or dividends, making them less attractive compared to interest-bearing investments.

Experts noted that gold and silver are on track for their most significant weekly decline in over four months. They highlighted that rising oil prices have intensified fears that interest rates will remain high for an extended period, prompting investors to adopt a cautious approach ahead of next week’s Federal Reserve meeting.

Oil prices surged approximately 4% to a five-month high following Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, which raised concerns about potential disruptions in energy supplies. This increase in energy costs can exacerbate inflationary pressures, further influencing the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions.

Future Price Predictions

However, Chainani cautioned that for upward trends to resume, gold must maintain levels above $4,200 and silver above $62. These thresholds are not guaranteed, and market volatility may persist depending on fluctuations in oil prices, inflation data, and the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions.

Market analysts reported that both gold and silver are displaying weakness in domestic futures trading, with gold opening lower at approximately Rs 142,060 and trading around Rs 142,450, down by 0.60%. Silver opened sharply lower at Rs 196,590, trading around Rs 196,050, down by 1.78%, indicating a continued decline below critical support levels.

Investment Considerations for Buyers

As the festive season approaches, the falling prices may entice buyers to consider immediate purchases of gold and silver. However, the future direction of bullion prices will largely depend on global economic developments, making it challenging to predict the lowest price point.

For individuals buying jewellery for Dhanteras or Diwali, it may be prudent to stagger purchases instead of making a single large investment. This approach can help mitigate the risk of further price declines. Buyers should also compare making charges and other associated costs, as these factors significantly influence the overall expenditure.

Long-term investors in gold and silver should evaluate their financial objectives and risk tolerance rather than base decisions solely on short-term price fluctuations. A strategic, staggered purchasing approach may help in managing costs over time, although it does not guarantee profits. As market volatility is expected to continue, buyers should focus on their budgets rather than attempting to time the market perfectly.
