Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla Achieves Historic Milestone, Surpasses 160 MMT in Cargo Handling for FY 2025-26

The CSR Journal Magazine

Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), located in Kandla, has marked a significant achievement by crossing the 160 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) threshold in cargo handling for the financial year 2025-26. The official figures reveal that the port handled an impressive 160.11 MMT, setting a record for the highest volume of cargo processed in the history of India’s major ports. This milestone positions DPA as the leading major port in India, showcasing its dominance in cargo throughput.

Year-on-Year Growth Record

The port has demonstrated exceptional growth, achieving a 7% increase in cargo handling compared to the previous year, which saw 150 million tons processed. This notable growth underscores the efficiency and effectiveness of operations at Kandla Port, contributing to its recognition as the best performer among major ports nationwide.

Sector-Specific Cargo Increases

A detailed analysis reveals remarkable increases in various cargo categories. Notably, fertilisers saw a 32% surge, liquid cargo increased by 23.4%, and container traffic surged by 54%. Other noteworthy contributions to overall volume include significant growth in iron and steel, which rose by 43%, along with a 17% increase in clay exports. These figures collectively illustrate a robust performance in the face of challenges.

Decreases in Other Cargo Commodities

Despite the overall positive performance, some categories experienced declines. Timber saw a reduction of 4.3%, salt dropped by 12.4%, and crude oil handled at Vadinar fell by 5%. Additionally, coal volumes decreased by 2.8%. However, DPA effectively compensated for these shortfalls through increased container traffic and higher volumes in fertilisers and liquid cargo, enabling the port to surpass the 160.11 million-ton milestone.

Celebratory Events Recognizing Contributions

To celebrate this landmark achievement, events took place across various locations, where port officials and employees gathered to honor their hard work and success. Acknowledging the efforts of all involved, utility kits were presented to workers and shramiks as a token of appreciation for their contributions to the port’s achievements.

Leadership Acknowledgment

During the celebrations, Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including port users, transporters, stevedores, shipping agents, customs officials, trade unions, and dedicated workers. His remarks emphasized that reaching the milestone of 160 million tons is not just a numerical achievement but a result of collective commitment and resilience from the entire port community.

Strategic Role in India’s Maritime Vision

Singh further noted that DPA’s accomplishment reflects a commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, reinforcing the port’s role as a significant contributor to India’s maritime and economic development. This milestone is seen as a critical pillar in advancing India’s maritime infrastructure and establishing a competitive global standing in the sector.
