Deadly Shooting At Tumbler Ridge Secondary School In British Columbia Leaves At Least 10 Dead

The CSR Journal Magazine

A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in the small town of Tumbler Ridge has left at least ten people dead, including the suspected shooter, and dozens more injured, authorities confirmed. The attack, which occurred on 10 February 2026, is one of the deadliest shootings in recent Canadian history and has shaken the tight-knit community of about 2,700 residents.

The first reports came shortly after 1:20 p.m. local time, when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police received a call about an active shooter at the secondary school. Officers responded rapidly and issued a Police Initiated Public Alert for residents to shelter in place as the situation unfolded. The alert was later cancelled after police confirmed there were no ongoing threats to the wider public.

Devastating Impact Inside And Outside The School

Police later discovered multiple victims at the school. Six people were found dead inside the building, while another victim died en route to hospital. Investigators also located two additional victims at a nearby residence that appeared linked to the shooting, bringing the confirmed death toll to ten, including the suspect, who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Around 27 others sustained injuries, with at least two airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening wounds.

Students and staff were quickly evacuated from Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, which serves grades 7 through 12, and local authorities emphasised that there was no continuing danger. Emergency responders and RCMP officers have been working to support victims, families, and the broader community.

Response From Officials And Community Support

The scale of the tragedy prompted an outpouring of reaction from leaders across Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carneyexpressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and postponed planned travel to address the aftermath. British Columbia Premier David Eby described the event as an “unimaginable tragedy” for the remote Peace region and urged residents to support one another in the days ahead. Mental health resources were immediately mobilised for survivors, families, and first responders as part of the community’s recovery efforts.

The investigation is ongoing, with police continuing to piece together the circumstances that led to the shootings and to determine any connections between the victims and the suspected shooter. The town’s schools will remain closed for the rest of the week as families and officials process the shock and grief of this devastating event.

Authorities have declined to release further details about the suspected shooter’s identity or motive, noting that inquiries are still underway. The incident has reignited discussions around gun violence and school safety in Canada, where such attacks remain rare but have profound community impacts.
