Monsoon Session Day 2: RS Deputy Chairman Harivansh Chairs House as VP Dhankhar Resigns

The CSR Journal Magazine

The second day of the Monsoon Session of Lok Sabha (LS) started at 11 am, but an hour later it was adjourned as the opposition protested over the discussion on Operation Sindoor. The House was chaired by Rajya Sabha (RS) Deputy Chairman Harivansh as Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned due to health issues on Monday evening.

A bill passed in RS on day 1

A similar situation occurred on Day 1 as well, when both Houses were adjourned after the opposition demanded a discussion around the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. However, yesterday the Bill of Lading was passed in RS; this bill is related to the modernization of shipping documents. It had already been passed in March in LS.

Month long session

The Monsoon Session started on July 21 and will continue for a month. It includes 21 sittings, with a break from August 12 till August 17 for Independence Day preparation. Both Houses will resume on August 18.

Protest by opposition

On Tuesday morning, MPs of different parties, including Congress, SP, RJD, TMC, DMK, and JMM, staged a protest in Parliament House against the Election Commission’s voter roll revision in Bihar. Different slogans were raised against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR); some placards had slogans like ‘SIR: Stealing Indian Rights’, while others read ‘SIR: Subverting Indian Republic’.

Demand on Modi’s presence

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also participated in the protest. Leaders of opposition parties were seen pressing for the presence of PM Modi to address the questions related to the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, Trump’s statements on the India-Pakistan ceasefire, Bihar’s SIR process, among other issues. The opposition also highlighted that questions related to Dalits, Adivasis, the AI 171 plane crash, and the Manipur civil war must be addressed and that PM Modi’s presence is needed.
