Mika Singh Seeks Apology from BJP MLA Subodh Uniyal Over Daler Mehndi Claims

The CSR Journal Magazine

Singer Mika Singh has met with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to discuss the recent controversy surrounding, Daler Mehndi. This meeting took place on Friday, following allegations made by BJP MLA Subodh Uniyal. Uniyal had accused Daler Mehndi of performing under the influence of alcohol during a Navratri event in Tehri. Mika Singh expressed his concerns through a detailed post on X, emphasising the need for a public clarification and apology from Uniyal.

Mika Singh articulated his request to Chief Minister Dhami, asking him to encourage Uniyal to issue a video statement to clarify his remarks and apologise to Daler Mehndi. He stated, “My only humble request to him is to please ask Shri @SubodhUniyal1 ji to make a simple video clarifying his statement and apologising to Daler Bhai for saying that he was drunk during the performance.” Mika further noted that misunderstandings can occur and can be resolved amicably.

In his post, Mika Singh acknowledged the Chief Minister’s efforts, stating that he has immense respect for Dhami and appreciates his personal involvement in the matter. He expressed hope that a simple gesture from Uniyal could help restore Daler Mehndi’s dignity and reputation.

Details of the Incident

The controversy erupted during a performance by Daler Mehndi at a Navratri event in Tehri last weekend. While on stage, MLA Subodh Uniyal interrupted Mehndi, questioning his fitness to perform. Uniyal alleged that the singer was not in a suitable condition to entertain the audience, stating, “You are unable to speak, how will you sing?” He further accused Mehndi of disrespecting the spirit of Navratri by allegedly performing while intoxicated.

In subsequent interviews, Uniyal claimed that the event’s organisers had paid Daler Mehndi Rs 35 lakh for his performance. He suggested that if Mehndi was unwell, he should have opted not to perform. Mika Singh responded to these claims, defending his brother’s reputation and highlighting that Mehndi had been unwell prior to the performance, which may have affected his ability to sing as expected.

Mika Singh condemned the manner in which Uniyal publicly humiliated his brother, asserting that such behaviour was disrespectful not only to Daler Mehndi but to the entire artistic community. He reiterated the importance of treating artists with dignity, regardless of the circumstances.

Industry Support and Reactions

Following Mika Singh’s video in support of Daler Mehndi, numerous artists from the entertainment industry have expressed their solidarity with the singer. Notable figures, including Anupam Kher, Ila Arun, Shaan, Kapil Sharma, Badshah, and Gurdas Maan, have voiced their support for Mika and Mehndi. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) also condemned the treatment of Mehndi during the incident, writing a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue.

As of now, Subodh Uniyal has not publicly commented on the ongoing controversy. The incident has sparked discussions about the treatment of artists and the responsibilities of public officials when interacting with them. Daler Mehndi, who gained fame in the 1990s with hits like “Bolo Ta Ra Ra” and “Tunak Tunak Tun,” remains a prominent figure in the Indian music scene.

His distinctive style, blending Punjabi folk and pop, has allowed him to reach diverse audiences over the years. The ongoing support from fellow artists and public figures underscores the importance of respect and dignity in the entertainment industry.
