CP Radhakrishnan Sworn In as 15th Vice-President of India

The CSR Journal Magazine

CP Radhakrishnan took the oath as the 15th vice-president of India on Friday, at an official ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu in front of a distinguished gathering of national leaders. This marked a significant moment in Indian politics after the office fell vacant following the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar due to health reasons.

Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted with full decorum at the historic Rashtrapati Bhavan. Senior leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, witnessed the event. Former vice-presidents Jagdeep Dhankhar, Venkaiah Naidu, and Hamid Ansari were also present, showcasing the continuity and respect for the office. Other dignitaries included Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar, and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. The state and national leadership gathered as a mark of unity and respect for the newly appointed vice-president.

After the oath, Radhakrishnan paid floral tribute at Rajghat, honouring Mahatma Gandhi. This gesture reflected his commitment to the ideals of peace and service cherished by the nation’s founding leaders. The ceremony concluded with congratulatory messages and a sense of optimism as the country welcomed its new vice-president.

Election and Background

CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee, was elected as the vice-president of India on Tuesday. In a closely followed contest, Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes, defeating opposition candidate and former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, who obtained 300 votes. The strong mandate reflected the faith reposed in him by the members of both houses of Parliament.

September 12 was specifically chosen as the date for the oath-taking ceremony, as the time was found to be auspicious by the officiating pandit, according to sources cited by news agency ANI. The timing aligned with traditional beliefs while also fulfilling constitutional procedures in a timely manner. The election became necessary after the sudden resignation of then incumbent vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21 due to health reasons, which led to a brief vacancy in the second highest constitutional office of the country.

A Distinguished Public Life

CP Radhakrishnan brings decades of experience in public life to his new role. Known for his steady rise through the ranks, he has served in various capacities as an MP, state-level party president, and gubernatorial office. His leadership is marked by a commitment to developmental work and party organisation across multiple states. With support from the ruling coalition and experience handling gubernatorial portfolios, Radhakrishnan steps into his new constitutional duties with expectations for impartiality and upholding the integrity of the Rajya Sabha.
