Court Grants Additional 45 Days to NIA for Delhi Blast Investigation

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Patiala House Court in New Delhi has approved an extension of 45 days for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to continue its investigation into the Delhi blast case. This decision was reached after the NIA submitted a formal request for additional time, highlighting the need for further inquiry due to recent developments. Previously, the court had granted a similar 45-day extension on February 13.

Details of the Investigation

Special NIA Judge Prashant Sharma made the ruling after reviewing the application presented by Special Public Prosecutor Madhav Khurana, representing the NIA. The application included a progress report of the investigation and detailed the requirement for more time to evaluate newly surfaced evidence and arrested individuals. The agency emphasized that recent arrests, particularly those of Zamir Ahmed Ahangar and Tufail Ahmad Bhat, necessitated further investigation.

Previous Developments in the Case

The investigation pertains to a high-intensity blast that occurred in a vehicle near the Red Fort on November 11, 2025. Following the incident, the Patiala House Court had allowed the NIA an initial 90-day period for investigation, which can be extended legally up to 180 days. This marks the second consecutive time the NIA has obtained an extension for the case.

Opposition from Defence Counsel

During the court proceedings, Defence Counsel M S Khan, representing accused individuals Dr. Shaheen Saeed and Dr. Muzammil Shakeel, opposed the request for an extension. Their argument stated that the NIA had already completed the investigation within the initially prescribed timeframe and did not demonstrate a compelling need for additional days.

Arrests and Progress in the Investigation

The NIA’s investigation has seen several arrests since its initiation, starting with Aamir Rashid Mir on November 16, 2025. Subsequently, other accused individuals, including Jasir Bilal Wani, Mufti Irfan Ahmed, Dr. Adeel Ahmed Rather, and Soyeb, have been taken into custody on various dates as inquiries developed. The ongoing investigation continues to generate significant attention due to the severity of the case and the implications of the findings.

Legal Context and Implications

According to legal provisions, the NIA is permitted to request extensions when justifiable circumstances arise. The combination of new evidence and ongoing arrests has made a strong case for the NIA’s latest application. The next steps in the investigation will depend on how efficiently the agency can utilize the granted time to gather more information and clarify the circumstances surrounding the blast.
