Congress Unveils Second List of 23 Candidatesfor Assam Assembly Elections

The Indian National Congress has officially released its second list of candidates for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for 2026. This latest list features 23 candidates, bringing the total number of nominations by the party to 65 out of the 126 available assembly seats. In addition, the Congress has designated 15 constituencies, including Bhowanipur-Sorbhoog, Bajali, Palasbari, Guwahati Central, Goreswar, Morigaon, and Barhampur, for its alliance partners.

Notable Candidates in the New List

Among the candidates introduced in this latest list, former MP Abdul Khaleque is set to contest from Mandia. Other nominees include Kartik Chandra Ray from Golakganj, Wazed Ali Choudhury from Birsing Jarua, Amrit Badsha from Bilasipara, and Mohibur Rohman from Mankachar.

Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam will run for the Goalpara East constituency, while Kishor Kumar Brahma is nominated for Dudhnoi (Scheduled Tribe). Additional candidates include Nurul Islam from Srijangram, Rakibuddin Ahmed from Chamaria, and Pranjit Choudhury representing Rangia. Kishore Kumar Baruah has been chosen for Dimoria (Scheduled Caste), while Santanu Borah will contest from New Guwahati.

Other Candidates Selected

The Congress party has also nominated Rijumoni Talukdar from Mangaldai, Jhilli Choudhury from Hojai, Batash Urang from Dhekiajuli, and Kartik Chandra Kurmi from Rangapara. Dr. Sankar Jyoti Kutum is set to compete from Gohpur, and Sailen Sonowal has been fielded for Dhemaji (Scheduled Tribe). Devid Phukan will contest from Tinsukia, Bipul Gogoi from Tingkhong, Sagorika Bora from Dergaon, and Dhrubjyoti Purkayastha from Dholai (Scheduled Caste). Aminur Rashid Choudhury has been assigned to contest from Karimganj South.

Previous Candidate Announcements

This second list follows the first, released by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on March 3, which featured 42 candidates selected by the party’s Central Election Committee for various constituencies throughout Assam. Prominent names in that list included Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat, Bitupan Saikia from Golaghat, and Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar from Gauripur.

Other significant candidates included Markline Marak from Goalpara West (Scheduled Tribe), Girish Baruah from Bongaigaon, and Mahananda Sarkar from Barpeta (Scheduled Caste). Several female leaders were nominated in that announcement as well, such as Nandita Das (Hajo-Sualkuchi Scheduled Caste), Pallabi Saikia Gogoi (Teok), and Suruchi Roy (Ram Krishana Nagar Scheduled Caste).

Political Context Ahead of Elections

The elections in Assam are expected to take place in the first half of this year. The political landscape is anticipated to be a contest between the current BJP-led NDA government and the Congress party. As the election date approaches, parties are preparing strategies to secure seats and gather public support across the state.
