Congress MP Manickam Tagore Calls for Parliamentary Debate on West Asia Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 9, Congress Member of Parliament Manickam Tagore expressed discontent with the government’s decision to allow External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to make a statement regarding the situation in West Asia rather than facilitating a detailed discussion in the Lok Sabha. Jaishankar’s statement is scheduled as the second phase of the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament is set to commence. Tagore described the minister’s communication as a “pasted statement,” urging greater accountability from the central government pertaining to energy security and the welfare of Indian citizens residing in the Gulf region.

Concerns Over Energy Security

In a post on social media platform X, Tagore emphasized the precarious nature of the Gulf region, which has seen rising oil and gas prices. He expressed concern for the thousands of Indians employed in the area, highlighting their heightened anxiety regarding safety and future prospects. Tagore pointed out the criticality of this situation, stating, “This is not a routine situation; it is a matter of India’s energy security and the safety of our citizens abroad. At a moment like this, the country deserves a serious discussion in Parliament.”

Call for Accountability

The Congress MP criticized the government for what he called “notice-board diplomacy,” asserting that mere statements are insufficient in addressing the complexities of the evolving situation. He remarked that India’s import dependency on Gulf oil means instability in that region has direct repercussions for fuel prices, inflation, and the overall economy. Tagore highlighted the silence of the Prime Minister and the unsatisfactory nature of the External Affairs Minister’s forthcoming statement as indicative of a broader lack of accountability from the government.

Support from Other Congress Leaders

Tagore’s request for a robust parliamentary discussion was echoed by fellow Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, who underscored the inadequacies of ministerial statements that often reiterate previously known information. Ramesh pointed out that such statements typically do not allow for parliamentary questioning, denying MPs the chance to seek essential clarifications regarding pressing issues. He advocated for a comprehensive debate, referencing a notable discussion in 2003 during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister concerning the U.S. invasion of Iraq. In that instance, the Lok Sabha passed a resolution denouncing the invasion, showcasing the importance of parliamentary engagement on significant international matters.

Context of the Ongoing Conflict

The anticipated statement by Jaishankar comes amid increasing global scrutiny related to recent developments in West Asia, notably following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to coordinated military actions by the United States and Israel on February 28. In response, Iran has conducted counter-strikes targeting U.S. military facilities across various nations in the region and Israeli interests. The situation remains dynamic, drawing attention to the implications for regional stability and security.

Parliamentary Schedule

The second phase of the Budget session is planned to continue until April 2, featuring essential legislative matters along with discussions surrounding the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27. This session, which commenced on January 28 with the President’s address, includes a total of 30 sittings over 65 days, culminating on April 2. As discussions unfold, the calls for greater parliamentary engagement regarding international conflicts are likely to persist.
