The Congress party, through leader Pramod Tiwari, has launched a vigorous criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Tiwari alleges that both entities are in collusion, labelling their actions as ‘treason’ against the Constitution and the democratic framework of the nation. He articulated these sentiments while responding to inquiries about Rahul Gandhi’s statements aimed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Tiwari contended that the BJP is actively shielding the Election Commission, claiming, “The BJP is defending the Election Commission shamelessly.” He suggested that both organisations are interconnected, alleging that if one entity is scrutinised, the other immediately comes to its defence. He emphasised that this collaboration is tantamount to a betrayal of the democratic ideals of India.

Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of undermining democracy with support from Gyanesh Kumar, Tiwari named other Election Commissioners, Joshi and Sandhu, as ‘witnesses’ to this alleged wrongdoing. He warned that while a formal trial might not yet be underway, the ‘trial’ in the court of public opinion has already commenced.

Public Outcry and Internal Dissent

In response to the challenges posed by the Congress, Tiwari noted a considerable public backlash against the BJP, which he characterised as an ‘eruption’ of discontent resulting from a perceived abandonment of trust. He stated that the general populace is already forming its judgments regarding the party’s integrity and actions.

The Congress leader also referenced the Election Commission’s clarification regarding its unanimous decision-making process in modifications concerning ACE Net data and Form 6. Tiwari pointed out instances of internal dissent among the Election Commission members as indicative of possible misconduct. “When three members are in the Election Commission, two members have accused the Chief Election Commissioner of taking actions that are illegal and undemocratic,” he noted.

Tiwari’s statements coincide with ongoing scrutiny of Rahul Gandhi’s prolonged assertions about the integrity of the Election Commission. Gandhi has termed the alleged discrepancies as ‘Vote Chori’ and positioned them as a matter of significant concern ahead of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting scheduled for September 29.

Election Commission’s Position

The Election Commission has responded by asserting that the processes followed are in accordance with established practices, describing internal technical notes and written queries as standard within a multi-member body. They reaffirmed that all final decisions regarding the SIR were taken unanimously and maintain their legality.

This clarification aims to mitigate the rising allegations and maintain the credibility of the Election Commission amidst ongoing accusations. The Commission reiterated its commitment to transparency and legal adherence in all operational procedures, particularly concerning the contentious SIR process.

In summary, the allegations raised by Congress against both the ECI and the BJP have intensified the political discourse surrounding the SIR. With the CWC meeting on the horizon, the Congress appears poised to advance its criticisms further, insisting on accountability and transparency in the electoral process.
