Congress Announces Candidates for 92 Seats in Kerala

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Congress party has officially presented candidates for 92 Assembly seats in Kerala, with the most recent list featuring 37 names unveiled on Thursday. Notably, no MPs were included in this second list, following intense discussions regarding candidate selection and requests from sitting MPs. A meeting convened at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge began late Wednesday at 10:30 PM and extended until 2:30 AM. The unusual timing and urgency of the meeting were attributed to concerns expressed by Rahul Gandhi concerning the process of ticket distribution in the state.

Internal Discontent Over Candidate Selection Process

As the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi reportedly conveyed dissatisfaction with the initial methodology employed for candidate selection. He advocated for a more organized presentation to the Congress Central Election Committee (CEC), emphasizing considerations that include caste representation, previous electoral results, and grassroots feedback, rather than relying solely on statewide recommendations. The extensive discussions also encompassed the topic of MPs wishing to participate in the Assembly elections, with the leadership opting not to allow their involvement due to potential by-elections and voter disorientation regarding leadership roles in the state.

Influence of KC Venugopal in Candidate Selection

Insights from the Congress machinery in Kerala indicate that party general secretary KC Venugopal has significantly shaped the candidate selection process, reportedly influencing nearly 60 percent of the nominees. In the initial roster of 55 candidates, 17 were associated with Venugopal, while nine were aligned with Ramesh Chennithala and five with VD Satheeshan. Some MPs managed to secure one or two nominations for allied individuals. Senior leader Shashi Tharoor has largely abstained from being involved in this selection process and has not advocated for tickets for his associates. Internal reports emphasize that final decisions were primarily driven by survey results, feedback from District Congress Committees, and assessments of previous victories.

Strategic Social Engineering in Candidate Distribution

The Congress has seemingly employed a strategic approach to social representation in its candidate announcements. Of the 92 candidates declared thus far, 22 are from the Christian community, including ten from the Syro-Malabar group. Additionally, 21 candidates hail from the Nair community and 20 from the Ezhava community. Twelve nominations were awarded to Muslim candidates, while three tickets went to Brahmin candidates. Furthermore, the party has aimed to showcase a younger leadership image, with 52 candidates under the age of 50.

Rejection of Assembly Tickets for Sitting MPs

Interest from at least five MPs, including former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee chief K Sudhakaran, Adoor Prakash, and Shafi Parambil, to contest in the Assembly elections was not accommodated by the leadership. Sources indicated that Rahul Gandhi raised concerns regarding potential Lok Sabha by-elections and the resultant confusion over the chief ministerial candidate. It was suggested that if the Congress achieves a majority, MLAs might later endorse a suitable leader for the chief minister’s position, potentially including an MP.

Concerns Regarding Women’s Representation Within the Party

Despite comprehensive discussions surrounding candidate selection, a notable dissent has emerged regarding the representation of women within the party’s choices. Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed expressed criticism for allocating only nine of the 92 seats to female candidates. She took to social media platform X to appeal to Rahul Gandhi to address what she characterized as a lack of attention towards women’s representation within the party. Reports suggest that Mohamed herself was vying for a nomination in Kannur, contingent upon K Sudhakaran forgoing his candidacy, and has expressed disappointment with the finalized candidate list.
