The resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has been hailed as a triumph for the student movement by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. He stated that “a cockroach has made a dictator bow down,” referring to the pressure the students have exerted on the government. Thackeray made these remarks during a joint press conference with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray in Mumbai on July 25. He extended his congratulations to students and their parents, particularly CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke, for their resilience in the face of adversity.

Emphasising the unrest that has spread across the country in recent days, Uddhav Thackeray noted that the movement was about more than just Pradhan’s resignation. He highlighted the government’s broader misconduct, suggesting that it has put immense pressure on the citizens. He called for the withdrawal of all legal cases against student protesters, arguing that those in power should not act with impunity.

Thackeray also claimed that the protests have unveiled what he referred to as the hooliganism of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), questioning the actions of law enforcement during the demonstrations. He directed criticism toward Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding clarity on whether complaints from young protesters will be addressed.

March Planned at Shivaji Park

During the press conference, Uddhav Thackeray announced that a march scheduled for the following day would proceed as planned, stating that it was an essential step to demonstrate the collective strength of the youth. He expressed gratitude for the widespread participation anticipated at the event, indicating it would be a show of unity and determination.

Raj Thackeray added his support for the students’ movement, declaring that the upcoming gathering at Shivaji Park would serve as a celebration of youth empowerment. He remarked on the students’ ability to compel the government to take notice and respond to their demands, reinforcing their impact on the political landscape.

Moreover, Raj Thackeray confirmed his party’s full support for CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke, affirming readiness to assist the protesters in their next steps, ensuring the sustained momentum of the movement. Both leaders expressed a commitment to stand with the youth as they navigate their goals and aspirations.

Government Responds to Protests

As the protests continued, Uddhav Thackeray challenged the governmental response to student demonstrations, raising concerns about the brutality faced by protesters. He cited instances of excessive force, including the use of water cannons and tear gas against students, alongside allegations of police misconduct. His critique extended to the operations of plainclothes officers and the lack of identification during confrontations.

Raj Thackeray acknowledged the assistance provided by the Mumbai Police in relation to the planned march, thanking them while also scrutinising broader police actions during the protests. The statements from both Thackerays coincided with a meeting between the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, which aimed to address the concerns leading to Pradhan’s resignation.

Pradhan stepped down from his position, citing the need to prevent the protests from being exploited by “anti-national forces.” This resignation came in the wake of widespread demonstrations against examination irregularities and a 26-day hunger strike led by activist Sonam Wangchuk. The CJP has indicated that their agitation will continue until all their demands, including legal protections for student protesters and accountability for police actions, are met.
