Uddhav And Raj Thackeray Lead Protest in Mumbai Against Gyanesh Kumar

The CSR Journal Magazine

Uddhav Thackeray, the chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), and Raj Thackeray, leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), spearheaded a significant protest march in Mumbai on Sunday. This protest was directed against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alongside concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission. The event, named the Virat Garjana Morcha, commenced from the Metro Cinema in South Mumbai and moved towards the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters.

Objectives And Demands

The march was organised to voice concerns over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The participating groups demanded the immediate removal or resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, highlighting their discontent with the Election Commission’s operations. The outcome they seek emphasizes accountability within the electoral process, reflecting the urgency of their claims.

Participants in the protest included state leaders from the Congress party and members of the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), who showed solidarity with the Thackerays during the march. This collective presence illustrated a unified stance against the issues concerning the electoral oversight in Maharashtra.

Significantly, the march had specific guidelines, such as the restriction on displaying party flags. Participants were encouraged to carry only the national tricolour, symbolising a united front focused on national integrity rather than party politics.

Context Of The Protest

This demonstration arrives in the wake of growing dissatisfaction with the Election Commission’s management, especially concerning the revision process of the electoral rolls. The Thackerays’ joint appearance signals a strategic alliance in addressing these concerns, as they engage in a coordinated campaign against perceived inadequacies within the electoral system.

Coinciding with this march, a similar event was recently held by the Cockroach Janta Party at Shivaji Park, which featured a ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ aimed at Gyanesh Kumar. Such events indicate a rising tide of protests across various political parties, underscoring the widespread discontent regarding electoral practices within the state.

Through this protest, both Thackeray leaders illustrated their commitment to scrutinising the integrity of the electoral framework. They aimed to foster heightened awareness among citizens regarding the importance of fair practices in elections and the functioning of the Election Commission.
