The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has publicly accused the Central government of failing to protect students amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged NEET paper leak. Speaking in Shimla on July 22, Sukhu stated that the Congress party stands firmly in support of the affected candidates and is committed to ensuring that the focus remains on the students rather than political interests.

During his address to the media, Sukhu emphasised the need for transparency regarding both the NEET paper leak and alleged financial irregularities concerning donations for the Ram Temple. His comments follow criticisms made by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan towards Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in which Sukhu defended Gandhi’s involvement as being supportive of students rather than politically motivated.

Sukhu highlighted that millions of students dedicate years of hard work to prepare for the medical entrance examination. He expressed concerns that a paper leak could not only derail their examination but also undermine the trust families place in the educational system. His comments reflect a growing concern about fairness in the examination process, which he believes has been jeopardised.

The Chief Minister articulated that the leak has resulted in significant distress for aspiring medical professionals. Sukhu asserted that “thousands of aspiring doctors have suffered injustice” due to the situation. Sukhu also drew parallels to previous incidents of paper leaks under the BJP administration, referencing a past episode involving the Staff Selection Commission in Himachal Pradesh. He mentioned that following the revelation of that scandal, his government took decisive action to dissolve the commission and initiated legal proceedings against those accountable.

In his statements, Sukhu demanded that the truth surrounding the NEET paper leak be disclosed and that severe punitive measures be directed at anyone found to be culpable. He reiterated Congress’s commitment to advocating for students and denouncing injustices in the education sector.
