CM MK Stalin Opposes Three-Language Policy in Tamil Nadu

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has unequivocally opposed the three-language formula outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP), declaring that it will not be implemented in the state during the tenure of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. This statement was made on February 1, 2025, amidst rising tensions over language policies in India.

In an interview, Stalin expressed confidence regarding his party’s prospects in the upcoming assembly elections, suggesting that the DMK is poised to emerge victorious in all 234 constituencies. He stated, “As long as the DMK is in power, we will not allow the three-language policy in Tamil Nadu. The chances of victory look excellent.”

This claim was backed by his strong criticism of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s remarks made recently. Stalin described these statements as “deeply irresponsible,” asserting that the Union Government is attempting to manipulate educational funding to impose Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states.

Allegations of Coercion by the Centre

Stalin’s criticism of the Centre extended to accusations of “weaponising” educational funds, particularly the withholding of Rs 2,200 crore allocated under the Samagra Shiksha scheme. He alleged that these actions are punitive measures aimed at coercing Tamil Nadu into accepting the NEP’s three-language policy.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the issue at hand is not merely about opposing languages, but rather about protecting the constitutional rights of Tamil Nadu. He stated on social media, “Tamil Nadu firmly rejects the three-language policy. This is not about opposing languages, but about resisting imposition and defending Constitutional rights.”

Stalin dismissed the Union Minister’s claims of no Hindi imposition as “plainly dishonest.” He argued that linking essential educational funding to compliance with the NEP effectively removes any meaningful choice for Tamil Nadu and other non-Hindi speaking states.

Defending Linguistic Diversity

In his address, Stalin underscored Tamil Nadu’s commitment to preserving its linguistic diversity. He strongly opposed any efforts, whether presented as flexibility or supported by financial incentives, to impose a singular linguistic framework across India. Stalin articulated concerns that the three-language formula threatens to dilute the unique cultural and linguistic attributes of Tamil Nadu.

According to the Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu’s rejection of language imposition stands firm under all circumstances. He indicated that such policies contribute to a homogenised vision of “One India,” which undermines the pluralism that characterises the nation.

This heated exchange follows Union Education Minister Pradhan attributing the Tamil Nadu government’s narrative of “Hindi imposition” to a diversionary tactic aimed at masking administrative failures. He accused the DMK of prioritising political narratives over the educational needs and equity of students in the state.
