Six devotees, including children, tragically lost their lives when a wall under construction at a temple collapsed during a storm in the Sangli district of Maharashtra on the evening of May 12, 2026. The severe weather, characterised by strong winds and heavy rainfall, prompted many devotees to seek shelter at the temple, where they had gathered to receive blessings.

According to eyewitness accounts, a sudden increase in wind intensity led to an iron-shed structure being uprooted and crashing into the wall. The Sangli Superintendent of Police, Tushar Doshi, reported that approximately 350 devotees were present at the temple premises at the time of the incident.

The wall, along with nearby tin sheets providing temporary shelter, failed under the pressure of the storm, trapping many devotees beneath the debris. First responders were quick to arrive on the scene to assist in the rescue efforts.

Following the collapse, a rapid response by medical teams ensured that the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment. Reports indicate that at least 20 additional individuals sustained injuries, with varying degrees of severity.
