Children Among Six Killed as Temple Wall Collapses Amid Storm in Maharashtra

The CSR Journal Magazine

Six devotees, including children, tragically lost their lives when a wall under construction at a temple collapsed during a storm in the Sangli district of Maharashtra on the evening of May 12, 2026. The severe weather, characterised by strong winds and heavy rainfall, prompted many devotees to seek shelter at the temple, where they had gathered to receive blessings.

According to eyewitness accounts, a sudden increase in wind intensity led to an iron-shed structure being uprooted and crashing into the wall. The Sangli Superintendent of Police, Tushar Doshi, reported that approximately 350 devotees were present at the temple premises at the time of the incident.

The wall, along with nearby tin sheets providing temporary shelter, failed under the pressure of the storm, trapping many devotees beneath the debris. First responders were quick to arrive on the scene to assist in the rescue efforts.

Response and Casualties

Following the collapse, a rapid response by medical teams ensured that the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment. Reports indicate that at least 20 additional individuals sustained injuries, with varying degrees of severity.

While six people were confirmed dead at the site, the condition of the injured varied, prompting hospitals to mobilise resources. The incident has led to an outpouring of grief throughout the adjacent community, with many families reportedly devastated by the loss of their loved ones.

Local police have remarked on the typical high attendance at the temple on Tuesdays, which is customarily a significant day for devotees. The area is now under an increased police presence as investigations commence regarding the structural integrity of the wall.

Reactions to the Tragedy

The tragic event has drawn significant attention, including condolences from prominent figures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on social media platform X, stating his distress regarding the loss of life due to the wall’s collapse. He conveyed his thoughts to the bereaved families and hoped for a swift recovery for those injured.

Community leaders and local officials have echoed these sentiments, emphasising the need for thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. There are calls for heightened safety measures and inspections of structures under construction, especially in areas known to be susceptible to severe weather conditions.

The aftermath of the disaster highlights the vulnerability of individuals during inclement weather and the critical importance of ensuring safety in public spaces. As the community mourns, discussions around building regulations and emergency response protocols are likely to gain prominence in future dialogues.
