Child Attacked by Stray Dogs on First Day of School in Rajasthan

The CSR Journal Magazine

A four-year-old boy suffered critical injuries after being attacked by stray dogs at a school in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district on Wednesday, drawing attention to the issue of safety within educational premises. This incident occurred at the Swami Vivekananda Model School located in Upni village, just as the child was beginning his first day of school. Accompanied by his elder brother, the child stepped outside his classroom approximately one and a half hours after arriving at the school.

Local residents expressed their concerns, alleging that the school’s main entrance was left open and that there was no security personnel present during the time of the attack. It was reported that the stray dogs entered the premises and launched an attack on the child near the entrance. A nearby resident heard the boy’s cries for help and intervened to rescue him from the dogs.

The boy was promptly taken to PBM Hospital, where medical staff confirmed that he had sustained severe head injuries. Doctors indicated that the dogs had caused significant lacerations to his scalp, and they stated that the child would require extensive wound care, with treatments expected to continue for a considerable period.

Community Outrage over Safety Protocols

The attack has incited considerable anger among the local villagers, who are demanding accountability for inadequate safety measures at the school. They pointed out that previous complaints about the presence of stray dogs had gone unaddressed and questioned why appropriate preventive steps hadn’t been implemented. Concerns were also raised over the lack of security personnel and the open state of the main gate at the time of the incident.

In light of this event, community members are calling for immediate actions to enhance safety measures in schools. This incident highlights the urgent need for both local authorities and school administrations to ensure that such vulnerabilities are addressed effectively.

Similar Incidents Highlight Growing Concern

This attack is not an isolated event in the context of dog-related incidents in India. Earlier in the year, a woman sustained severe injuries after being attacked by a pet dog while she was walking in Bengaluru on January 26. Authorities reported that the dog bit her multiple times, delivering injuries to her neck, face, arms, and legs. She was swiftly taken to a hospital for urgent treatment, where over 50 stitches were required to address the injuries.

These incidents are drawing attention to the broader issue of canine safety and the management of stray animals in urban and rural areas. As communities grapple with their safety, the emphasis on better management policies and security practices is becoming increasingly crucial.
