Chhattisgarh: Security Forces Initiate Operation Black Forest 2 Against Naxals in Karreguttalu Hills

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Chhattisgarh, approximately 2,000 security personnel have activated ‘Operation Black Forest 2’ in the Karreguttalu hills targeting Naxal insurgents. This anti-Naxal offensive commenced late on Tuesday evening and is a continuation of efforts launched in previous operations. The objective is to significantly weaken Naxal forces in the region. Previous initiatives aimed at dismantling Naxal operations began with ‘Operation Black Forest,’ which focused on the security dynamics along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border, initiating in May 2025 with an ambitious timeline to eradicate Naxalism by March 26, 2026.

Achievements of Operation Black Forest

Operation Black Forest, which lasted for 21 days from April 21 to May 11, 2025, involved a collaboration between the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state police. During this operation, security forces successfully neutralized a total of 31 Naxals who had bounties totaling Rs 1.72 crore. A strategic Forward Operating Base, known as Ghalgam FOB, established near the operation site in 2022, significantly contributed to the success of these efforts by facilitating tactical operations and intelligence gathering. The initiative resulted in the destruction of 214 Naxal hideouts and bunkers, in addition to recovering a substantial cache of munitions and supplies.

Impact and Recoveries in Previous Operations

During the past operation, security forces confiscated about 450 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 818 BGL shells, 899 bundles of explosives, as well as detonators and large quantities of explosive material. Additionally, security personnel recovered nearly 12,000 kilograms of food supplies intended for Naxal units, highlighting the logistical challenges faced by the insurgents. Earlier in February, in a separate operation in the dense forests of Abujhmaad along the Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border, three Naxal members were reportedly killed. A C60 commando sustained injuries during this engagement and later succumbed to those injuries in a medical facility, as detailed by local authorities.

Concluding Developments and Current Focus

The fatalities in the Abujhmaad engagement bring the total number of Naxals killed to three, emphasizing the ongoing confrontations between security forces and insurgents. Recovery efforts also led to the retrieval of one AK-47 assault rifle and one Self-Loading Rifle from the encounter location, further underscoring the challenges posed by armed groups in these areas. As Operation Black Forest 2 unfolds, security forces remain focused on reinforcing their strategies and operational effectiveness to address the persistent threat posed by Naxals in the region.
