‘They Defended Well’: Brazil Boss Ancelotti Praises India Despite 4-0 Victory

The CSR Journal Magazine

Brazilian coach Carlo Ancelotti appreciated the challenge posed by India during their friendly match, which concluded in a 4-0 victory for the five-time FIFA World Cup champions on Saturday in Kolkata. Ancelotti remarked that India’s performance made it difficult for Brazil to score initially. The home team maintained strong organisation for the first twenty-seven minutes at Salt Lake Stadium before Estevao finally managed to net the opening goal in the 28th minute.

Following Estevao’s goal, Brazil doubled their lead just before half-time, with Pedro finding the back of the net. In the second half, Samuel Lino added two more goals to secure a commanding win for Brazil. Ancelotti commented on the significance of the opening goal, noting that it allowed Brazil to gain better control over the match.

Despite the scoreline, Ancelotti acknowledged the effectiveness of India’s defensive strategy and their attempts at counter-attacking. He commented, “They defended, they were organised, they tried to play counter-attack. I think they played a good game,” indicating his respect for India’s efforts on the field.

Ancelotti Reflects on Defensive Adjustments

Although Brazil secured a clean sheet, Ancelotti admitted that his team could have performed better defensively. He fielded a new defensive lineup, resulting in a few players collaborating for the first time in a match setting. He noted, “We defended well. We could have defended better. It was a new defence that never played together, so it could be that not everything was perfect.” This flexibility reflects Brazil’s ongoing process of rebuilding following their early exit from the recent World Cup.

The friendly match served as a platform for Ancelotti to evaluate younger players and their potential for future national representation. He stated, “It was a test. Now it’s a moment for us to give an opportunity to the young, to be part of the squad, to know, and for us to know, if they have the quality to be part of the national team in the future.”

Moreover, Ancelotti expressed gratitude to the crowd in Kolkata, who turned up in large numbers despite the humid conditions. His remarks included, “We are happy to be here. We try to do our best. We try to show to all the people that love Brazil and love football, to show our best quality. And I hope they enjoy the night.”

India’s Coach Supports Gurpreet Singh Sandhu After Brazil’s Goals

Following India’s loss, coach Khalid Jamil extended his support to goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who was substituted at half-time after Brazil scored two goals. Gurpreet, who made his 90th appearance and captained the side, failed to prevent the goals but Jamil refrained from placing blame solely on him. He asserted, “It’s not because of Gurpreet, he’s one of the finest goalkeepers of the country. The defender didn’t close down, then the ball moved from there as well. So overall, everybody’s mistake.”

While Jamil did not definitively confirm who would be in goal for India’s upcoming friendly against Uruguay, he clarified that Gurpreet still features in his plans going forward. He stated, “Maybe Som (Kumar) will play, maybe Albino (Gomes), anyone. Depending on the situation. But Gurpreet, definitely he will be back.”

Jamil acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Brazil, highlighting the exceptional quality and experience of their players, many of whom compete at top international clubs. He highlighted how managing such talent is a significant task, stating, “Definitely their quality, their coach is also good. They’ve played in different clubs. So to manage them, it is very difficult, not an easy job.”

Reflecting on the turning point of the match, Jamil remarked that the dynamic shifted following Brazil’s first goal. He noted, “Till the water break, I was thinking everything will be fine. Then we scored a silly goal. Then we scored a second goal. So the calculation has changed a little.” He stressed that encounters against teams like Brazil serve as vital experiences for his players.
