Uttar Pradesh Woman Gives Birth Outside Hospital Amid Allegations of Denied Admission

The CSR Journal Magazine

A woman in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, has reportedly given birth outside a district hospital after her family claimed that staff denied her admission despite her experiencing labour pains. The allegations came to light via a video that circulated on social media on Sunday. Relatives of the woman indicated that they had brought her to the hospital on Saturday when she began showing signs of labour, but they faced multiple delays in securing admission.

In the shared footage, Archana, a relative of the woman, recounted their experience, stating that hospital staff instructed her sister-in-law to walk around and only took her to the labour room several times without providing formal admission. According to Archana, the family was repeatedly sent back from the hospital without any assistance, culminating in the woman unexpectedly giving birth outside the hospital premises.

Additionally, Archana alleged that a staff member demanded a sum of Rs 10,000 for the delivery and instructed them not to disclose this information to anyone. These claims have led to widespread concern and condemnation among the local population.

Hospital Response and Official Denials

Nirmala Sahu, the superintendent of the District Women’s Hospital, has rejected the claims made by the family concerning the demand for money. Following the incident, she stated that she actively sought information from the involved doctors and other hospital personnel. Furthermore, she indicated that security staff were also interrogated to clarify how the woman managed to exit the hospital facilities.

Sahu remarked, “The security personnel have been reprimanded. Strict action will be taken against whoever is found responsible.” This statement illustrates the hospital’s intent to address the issue and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident thoroughly.

This case is notably the second recent incident in Uttar Pradesh involving a woman allegedly being denied hospital admission during childbirth. The rising frequency of such occurrences has raised alarms about the treatment of pregnant women in medical institutions across the state.

Previous Incident Raises Further Concerns

On September 28, another incident came to public attention when a 20-year-old woman, identified as Rani Vanvasi, was allegedly refused admission at the Maharaja Chet Singh Government District Hospital in Bhadohi. The medical staff purportedly cited her anaemic state as a reason for the denial, claiming that there was insufficient blood available for a transfusion. However, it was revealed that her brother was willing to donate blood, yet the hospital failed to facilitate this arrangement.

Rani subsequently went into labour along a roadside the following night, assisted by women who were with her. Claims from her family indicated that medical personnel, upon discovering Rani’s belonging to the Musahar community, refused to provide her with care and denied her admission to the hospital.

The Rae Bareli case, which is currently under investigation, underscores ongoing issues regarding the treatment of expectant mothers in Uttar Pradesh. These incidents have highlighted the urgent need for improvements in healthcare access and equitable treatment for all communities within the state.
