The Uttarakhand government has suspended the Char Dham Yatra for two days following persistent heavy rainfall and multiple landslides that have disrupted key pilgrimage routes across the state. The decision, announced on July 28 by Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Anand Swaroop, was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of thousands of pilgrims travelling to the Himalayan shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Authorities said the yatra will resume only after weather conditions improve and the affected routes are declared safe for travel.

Landslides Disrupt Key Routes

Continuous monsoon rains have triggered landslides at several vulnerable stretches along the Char Dham routes, leading to road blockages and traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a heavy rainfall alert for parts of Uttarakhand, prompting officials to restrict further movement of pilgrims.

Teams from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Public Works Department (PWD), National Highways authorities and disaster response agencies have been deployed to clear debris and restore connectivity. However, officials have stressed that travel will remain suspended until engineers certify the roads as safe.

Police Preparedness and Public Safety Measures

District administrations, Uttarakhand Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other emergency agencies have been placed on high alert. Pilgrims who are already on the route have been directed to stay at designated holding areas and safe shelters until further instructions are issued.

Officials have also appealed to devotees not to attempt travel on blocked roads or rely on unverified social media updates, urging them instead to follow official advisories issued by the administration. Continuous monitoring of weather conditions and road status is underway across all four pilgrimage corridors.

Authorities Urge Patience

The Char Dham Yatra attracts lakhs of devotees every year, particularly during the summer pilgrimage season. However, the fragile Himalayan terrain becomes highly susceptible to landslides during the monsoon, making temporary suspensions a common safety measure.

Authorities have assured pilgrims that every effort is being made to reopen the routes at the earliest. Until then, travellers are advised to postpone their journeys, monitor official weather bulletins and cooperate with local authorities to ensure a safe and orderly resumption of the yatra
