California Teen Develops Biodegradable Paper Towels from Food Waste

A remarkable initiative by 17-year-old Arnav Kodavati from California aims to turn discarded food waste into biodegradable paper towels. His project highlights a creative solution to two critical environmental issues: the vast quantities of food waste generated and the ecological impact of disposable paper products. Presented at the International Science and Engineering Fair, this research underscores the potential for food scraps to be reimagined as useful materials.

Process of Creating Absorbent Sheets

Kodavati’s methodology begins by processing food waste—such as banana peels and vegetable scraps—into smaller particles via drying and pulverisation. Following this, the materials undergo a series of treatments, including acid and alkaline processing, to eliminate undesired components and isolate cellulose fibres. These fibres are then combined with pectin, a natural polymer derived from plants, and moulded into thin sheets. The addition of calcium chloride enhances the structure of the sheets by promoting the formation of strong ionic bonds within the pectin, which is crucial for enhancing absorbency.

The development of these sheets addresses a significant challenge in absorbent materials: the need to quickly absorb liquid while remaining intact. Tests indicated that the method of calcium crosslinking could reduce absorption rates by 20 to 40 per cent in some cases, but it also improved the wet strength of the sheets. For instance, the wet strength increased from approximately 0.19 newtons for non-treated samples to about 0.34 newtons after the calcium treatment. The prototypes, measured at 5 by 5 centimetres, could absorb between 5 to 6 millilitres of liquid each.

The formulations tested successfully displayed effective pore sizes ranging from 20 to 30 micrometres, which is essential for optimising material performance. Variations in sheet weight and concentrations of pectin were also explored to enhance product efficiency.

Economic Viability of the Project

Aside from environmental considerations, Kodavati’s project evaluated the economic feasibility of producing these biodegradable paper towels on a larger scale. Initial estimates suggest that it could cost around USD 2.98 to produce 100 sheets from food waste, in contrast to the approximately USD 3.40 for conventional sustainable paper towels. However, these figures remain theoretical and would require comprehensive study to validate.

For successful commercialisation, several logistical factors must be addressed, including the collection and transport of food waste, processing requirements, the chemistry involved, energy consumption, equipment needs, and quality control measures. The variability in food waste composition also poses a challenge, as different types of scraps provide varying amounts of cellulose, leading to inconsistencies in production.

Potential Applications Beyond Paper Towels

The scope of Kodavati’s innovation could extend well beyond paper towels. With additional research and development, the cellulose and pectin combination may be adapted for other products such as wipes, packaging materials, and absorbent mats. Each of these applications would require careful consideration of the necessary balance between characteristics like strength, softness, stiffness, and absorbency.

At present, Kodavati’s invention is a laboratory-stage concept that requires further study and larger-scale trials. Nonetheless, its foundational idea of converting waste into usable materials presents an intriguing opportunity for future sustainability. For a young researcher, this project represents more than an academic pursuit; it embodies hope for a more sustainable approach to waste management and resource utilisation.
