BSF Launches India’s First Drone Warfare School in Tekanpur to Counter New Border Threats

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has inaugurated its first-ever drone warfare school at its training academy in Tekanpur, Madhya Pradesh. This initiative comes in direct response to the evolving nature of threats along India’s borders, particularly highlighted by challenges faced during Operation Sindoor earlier this year. The new institution aims to develop offensive and defensive drone capabilities, equipping BSF personnel to meet modern-day border threats effectively.

Responding to Modern Border Challenges

The use of drones in smuggling narcotics and weapons, as well as hostile drone incursions, has been a growing concern for the BSF over the past four to five years. Operation Sindoor exposed a marked increase in drone-enabled threats, necessitating specialised training for officers and personnel. The drone warfare school was established to address these challenges comprehensively, training officers from all branches of the BSF in piloting, tactics, and research and development related to drones.

The school is divided into three wings: Flying and Piloting, Tactics, and Research and Development. He has emphasised that the tactics wing plays a crucial role by integrating offensive and defensive drone operations, with training focused on joint operations involving both officers and soldiers. The curriculum has been developed after a thorough analysis of five years of border incidents, including forensic studies of the technologies used by smugglers and hostile actors, ensuring that training is rooted in real-world experiences.

Training for Future Warfare

The school conducts two flagship courses—the Drone Commando course and the Drone Warrior course—targeted at different levels of personnel. The Drone Commando course is designed for frontline operators who will handle drone deployment at the borders, focusing on piloting, rapid assembly, repairs, and weaponisation.

The training covers not just flying skills but also the tactical use of drones in operational scenarios and detailed technical education including anti-drone systems. The curriculum includes case studies from global conflicts, such as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, showcasing the transformative impact of drones on modern warfare. In fact, drones have altered battlefield dynamics to the extent that traditional cover like trenches offers little protection, prompting a revision of tactical doctrines.

Moreover, the BSF is equipping trainees with knowledge on counter-drone operations such as detecting, jamming, and neutralising enemy drones, integrating these into broader border patrol strategies. The school also procures advanced equipment such as jammers and radar trainers, with an estimated procurement budget of Rs 20 crore dedicated to establishing a comprehensive training ecosystem.

Strategic Shift and Technology Integration

The BSF’s drone warfare school marks a strategic shift towards embracing technology-driven security measures, combining modern warfare tactics with indigenous innovation. The school’s establishment aligns with the broader Indian defence vision to create a technology-ready force capable of handling hybrid and asymmetric threats at the border. The school is also expected to train officers who will impart drone warfare knowledge across field units, thereby expanding the capabilities beyond the academy itself.

The training is not limited to flying drones but extends to understanding environmental factors that impact drone surveillance and reconnaissance missions, such as electromagnetic interference and weather conditions. This comprehensive approach ensures that BSF personnel remain adept at using drones for surveillance, intelligence gathering, and combat roles.

The inauguration of India’s first dedicated drone warfare school opens a new chapter in border security, underpinning the BSF’s readiness to meet changing threats with skill, technology, and indigenous innovation. This initiative is poised to enhance India’s border defence capabilities significantly in the years to come.
