BSF foils major smuggling attempts on India-Bangladesh Border

In two coordinated and highly successful operations, the Border Security Force (BSF) South Bengal Frontier thwarted significant cross-border smuggling attempts involving gold and silver. The swift actions by BSF jawans led to the seizure of gold worth over Rs 1.56 crore and silver jewellery valued at approximately Rs 8.36 lakh.

Commenting on the operations, the Public Relations Officer of the South Bengal Frontier said: “BSF jawans are fully trained, vigilant, and dedicated to eradicating smuggling and other unlawful activities along the border. We appeal to all border residents to assist in this mission by reporting any suspicious activities.”

To bolster citizen involvement, the BSF has encouraged people to use its Seema Sathi Helpline (14419) or contact them via WhatsApp or voice message at 9903472227. Informants providing credible intelligence will be suitably rewarded, and their identities will remain strictly confidential.

These operations highlight the unwavering vigilance and operational excellence of the BSF in protecting India’s borders from cross-border criminal syndicates.

Operation Banpur: 12 gold biscuits seized in Nadia

Acting on a credible tip-off from intelligence sources, jawans of the 32nd Battalion of the South Bengal Frontier launched a surveillance operation near the Banpur border post in Nadia district, a known hotspot for smuggling across the India-Bangladesh border.

During the operation, BSF personnel spotted three individuals lurking near the barbed wire fence on the Indian side. These suspected smugglers concealed themselves in a roadside drain, anticipating the delivery of contraband from the Bangladeshi side.

Shortly thereafter, a packet was tossed across the border into Indian territory. As the suspects emerged to retrieve it, BSF jawans swiftly moved in to intercept them. However, leveraging the dense population of the Phulbari village (Banpur) area, the smugglers managed to escape, evading capture without confrontation as the BSF exercised restraint and avoided weapon use due to civilian presence.

Upon recovering the packet, BSF discovered 12 gold biscuits with a total weight of 1.662 kilograms. The estimated market value of the seized gold stands at Rs 1,56,06,180. The smuggled gold has since been handed over to the appropriate enforcement department.

Swarupnagar Sting: Nearly 11 Kg of silver recovered

On the same day, another significant anti-smuggling operation was executed by the 143rd Battalion of the BSF in the Swarupnagar police station jurisdiction of North 24 Parganas.

BSF jawans, stationed at the Nityanandkati check post, detected suspicious modifications in a motorcycle attempting to cross the border. Upon inspection, 10.83 kilograms of silver jewellery—cleverly concealed inside the motorcycle’s oil tank—were recovered. An Indian national was apprehended in connection with this smuggling attempt.

The confiscated silver jewellery, estimated to be worth Rs 8.36 lakh, was immediately handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal action.
