The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has countered Rahul Gandhi’s recent accusations against the Election Commission, labelling his statements as based on “unknown, conspicuous, and dubious sources.” The party’s national spokesperson, Sudhanshu Trivedi, asserted that Gandhi lacks an understanding of Indian political dynamics.

The BJP’s response came after Gandhi’s remarks at a press conference held at Congress’s headquarters in New Delhi. Trivedi highlighted the Congress party’s electoral history in several states, noting that they have not held power in Tamil Nadu since 1967, Bengal since 1977, Bihar since 1990, Uttar Pradesh since 1989, and Odisha since 1999.

He claimed that this lack of success demonstrates a disconnection from reality regarding the current political landscape. Allegations concerning the Congress party’s struggles to reclaim power were linked to advancements in election transparency, characterised by the introduction of CCTV cameras and an independent media. Trivedi suggested that these elements have rendered it challenging for Congress to regain political influence.

RaGa’s Claims Against the ECI

During the press conference, Rahul Gandhi launched a pointed critique of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, labelling him a “deshdrohi”, meaning traitor, and insisted on his immediate resignation. He articulated that his accusations were serious and grounded in factual evidence, stating his concerns for the integrity of the electoral process.

Gandhi further accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of compromising India’s democratic foundations. He maintained that the Election Commission has a responsibility to protect voters’ rights, emphasising the critical role of a functioning electoral system in safeguarding the Constitution.

Moreover, Gandhi expressed that he has been vocal about these issues for the last three years, asserting that his comments are based on substantial evidence rather than speculation. He reiterated that his observations stem from facts, firmly rejecting the notion of conjecture as the basis for his claims.

Concerns of Electoral Manipulation

In a continuation of his allegations, Gandhi asserted that current elections in India faced manipulation. He expressed a “100 per cent certainty” that both the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and forthcoming Assembly elections have already been compromised. He stated that ample information exists to support these assertions, reinforcing his belief that the electoral framework is under threat.

As part of his remarks, Gandhi renewed his criticism directed at Kumar, Modi, and Shah. He categorically claimed that the integrity of the electoral process and the rights of voters are increasingly being undermined. His assertions placed significant pressure on the Election Commission, calling attention to the necessity for accountability within the institution.

In light of these escalating tensions, the BJP’s rebuttal and Gandhi’s allegations signal ongoing political friction. It comes as the nation approaches critical electoral milestones. Both parties seem entrenched in a narrative battle over the legitimacy of the electoral process in India. The situation highlights the polarised political environment as the 2029 Lok Sabha elections draw near.
