BJP Leads In Assam And WB Bypolls As TVK Gains Edge In Tamil Nadu

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on course for decisive victories in the West Bengal assembly bypolls and the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam as vote counting entered its final stages on Thursday. Meanwhile, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam established strong leads over rival parties in Tamil Nadu, and the ruling All India N R Congress secured a swift victory in Puducherry’s Thattanchavady constituency.

The by-elections across the four regions are being closely monitored as key indicators of the prevailing political sentiment. The contests serve as an important assessment of Vijay’s newly formed party in Tamil Nadu, while in West Bengal, the voting provides the first major electoral reflection following the BJP’s emergence to power earlier this year after ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year tenure.

BJP Takes Command In West Bengal And Assam

In West Bengal, the BJP established commanding leads across both contested assembly constituencies. Meanwhile, BJP candidate Hasirani Rath surged ahead with a margin exceeding 1,21,236 votes in Nandigram. In Rejinagar, BJP candidate Shankharav Sarkar maintained a steady lead after securing 72,472 votes against his nearest competitor from Humayun Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party.

Opposition parties demanded fresh polling over allegations of voter intimidation and booth-level irregularities. But the BJP dismissed the charges, citing the peaceful voting arrangement. In Assam’s Nagaon parliamentary constituency, BJP candidate and former IAS officer Devashish Sharma secured an unassailable lead of 83,304 votes over All India United Democratic Front chief Badruddin Ajmal.

Sharma polled 2,24,490 votes compared to Ajmal’s 1,41,186 votes, while Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora trailed in third place. The by-election was necessitated after two-term Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the seat to join the BJP prior to the state assembly polls.

TVK Surges In TN As AINRC Wins Puducherry

In Tamil Nadu, the TVK edged closer to securing victories in both the Dharapuram and Madurantakam assembly constituencies. In Dharapuram, TVK candidate P Sathyabama led the field with 51,253 votes, ahead of DMK’s S Suganya, who received 42,390 votes. Meanwhile, in Madurantakam, TVK candidate K Maragatham Kumaravel led with 34,894 votes, holding an 11,691-vote advantage over DMK’s I Paranthamen.

The election served as a crucial test for the ruling DMK, which contested the bypolls independently without its traditional allies, including the Congress, VCK, and Left parties. In Puducherry, the ruling AINRC retained the Thattanchavady assembly seat following a three-cornered contest. AINRC candidate Ashok Anand emerged victorious after four rounds of counting by polling 13,358 votes. He defeated Congress nominee E Vinayagam by a margin of 8,482 votes, while the DMK finished in third position.
