Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain paid tribute to former Bihar Chief Minister Bindeshwari Prasad Mandal on his birth anniversary on Tuesday.

Leaders Pay Floral Tributes

The tribute ceremony was held near Mandal’s life-size statue at the intersection of Deshratna Marg and Circular Road. Choudhary and Hasnain offered floral tributes in his memory.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar, Cooperative Minister Ram Kripal Yadav, MLA Shyam Rajak and MLC Sanjay Kumar Singh were among those present. Mandal’s grandson, Dr Manish Mandal, and other family members also attended.

The ceremony featured prayers, aarti and patriotic performances by artists from the Information and Public Relations Department. The national anthem, Bihar anthem and other patriotic songs were also performed.

CM Highlights Mandal’s Role in Social Justice

Choudhary remembered Mandal for his contribution to social justice and his efforts to advance the rights of backward and marginalised communities.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister described him as the architect of the Mandal Commission and a pioneer of social justice, saying his struggle for disadvantaged sections of society would continue to inspire generations.

Who Was BP Mandal?

Bindeshwari Prasad Mandal, popularly known as BP Mandal (1918–1982), was a prominent politician and social reformer. He began his political career with the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1952.

Mandal later became the seventh Chief Minister of Bihar, serving briefly in 1968. He is best remembered nationally for his role in the Mandal Commission, which examined the social and educational conditions of backward classes in India.
