In a harrowing incident in Bengaluru, a 35-year-old woman named Vanajakshi succumbed to severe burn injuries after being set on fire by her live-in partner, Vital, a cab driver with a known history of alcoholism and domestic abuse. The incident occurred at a busy traffic signal and has shocked the city.
History of Abuse and Separation
According to police, Vanajakshi had been in a live-in relationship with Vital for nearly four years. Both had a history of previous marriages, Vital had been married thrice, while Vanajakshi had been married twice. Tensions reportedly escalated in the relationship due to Vital’s habitual drinking and abusive behavior.
Recently, Vanajakshi had moved away from him and had become friends with Mariappa, a member of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, a Kannada activist group.
Brutal Crime at Traffic Signal
On the day of the crime, Vanajakshi was returning from a temple with Mariappa and a driver. Vital allegedly followed their car and intercepted it at a traffic signal. He then poured petrol into the vehicle, splashing all three occupants. While Mariappa and the driver managed to escape, Vital chased Vanajakshi down, doused her with more petrol, and ignited her using a lighter.
A passerby who witnessed the horrifying act rushed to help, using a cloth to extinguish the flames. He, along with others, shifted the severely burned Vanajakshi to a private hospital. The man sustained minor burns while attempting the rescue.
Victim Dies in Hospital, Accused in Custody
Despite efforts by doctors, Vanajakshi, who had suffered nearly 60% burns, died in the hospital. Vital, who also sustained injuries during the incident, was arrested within 24 hours by the police.
