A 26-year-old tech professional, Priyanka Kumari Poonia, tragically lost her life on Friday morning after a truck ran over her near Huskur Main Road in Alur, Bengaluru Rural district. She was riding pillion on a motorcycle driven by her brother, Naresh Kumar Poonia, when the incident occurred around 10:50 am.
Brother of Victim Recalls Tragic Moment
Naresh explained the circumstances leading to the accident, saying, “As usual, I used to leave my sister at the Madavara Metro Station every day. I don’t know what happened yesterday. A car in front of us stopped due to a pothole in the road. I had to brake (my motorcycle) and I was not able to comprehend what to do there. My sister (Priyanka) died on the spot.”
According to the police, while attempting to avoid a pothole, Naresh lost control of the bike. Both siblings fell, and Priyanka, who was not wearing a helmet, was crushed under the truck. Naresh, wearing a helmet, sustained minor injuries. A police officer said, “Priyanka’s brother was riding the bike while she was the pillion rider. He was wearing a helmet. Soon after they left home and were heading to their destination, he tried to avoid a bad patch of road. Both of them fell off the bike the rider escaped as he had a helmet on, but Priyanka, who wasn’t wearing one, was run over by a lorry and died on the spot.”
Police Investigating Accident
The Madanayakanahalli Police visited the scene, registered a case, and shifted Priyanka’s body to Nelamangala Government Hospital for post-mortem. The officer added, “We haven’t yet recorded a statement from her brother to ascertain the exact reason for the accident. They are not in a position to speak to us right now. We will investigate further and record his statement, after which the cause of the mishap will be clear.”
Priyanka worked with the UK-based OneSavings Bank Group in Bengaluru. The accident has brought renewed attention to the poor condition of Bengaluru’s roads, with potholes being linked to several recent fatal accidents. Naresh noted that the stretch of road where the mishap occurred has remained in disrepair for over seven months.
